If you think about it super Mario world is Mario's 2nd (when he is awake) adventure he goes on. In super Mario Bros the lost levels, in the manual it's just a different universe, in super Mario Bros 2 he is asleep and in super Mario Bros 3 it's all a play. So super Mario world is the 2nd adventure Mario goes on.
