This verse came up when I stated in my last episode that God doesn't create Evil that Evil is the absence of God. And on face value looking at the King James version of Isaiah 45:7 would make anyone say that God does indeed create Evil.

But let's do as the Bereans would do and go deeper into the text. Let's look at the actual Hebrew of this verse and see what it actually says. The Hebrew word here is ra‘ which translates to immediately: Evil, bad, wicked, harmful, unpleasant. However let's look at the exhaustive concordance in Strong's and it also includes: adversity, affliction, calamity, displeasure, distress. Which denotes more of a judgement upon sin.

Now let's look at the Berean Standard version of the text(and MOST other versions): "I form the light and create the darkness; I bring prosperity and create calamity. I, the LORD, do all these things."

We now get a fuller picture of what the text actually means. Remember, CONTEXT matters when looking at ANY verse in the Bible. We can't just translate a word and look at an immediate set of definitions and say THIS is the answer.

God isn't the creator of Evil, no, Evil is the absence of God as I stated in the podcast. God does bring judgement for sin and Evil however, which this verse is stating.
