Where the life of the mind is down to earthđŸŒ»

Hello hello, I’m Jo, and welcome to Thought Couture! I believe stimulating literary discussion and quality writing resources should be accessible to anyone who’s interested. That’s my mission with Thought Couture—to craft a space where literature nerds of all stripes can share ideas, connect with their peers, and continue developing their skills and smarts.

On this channel you’ll find reviews and recommendations of new releases as well as brilliant backlist titles, creative writing motivation and education, and fun bookish chats that aren’t all that serious.

My reading life focuses on literary fiction, classics, creative nonfiction, poetry, and women’s/lgbt voices—so if our interests overlap, consider subscribing! I’d love to have you around 🌈

(Are you a publisher interested in my review of your upcoming release? Feel free to reach out! Please note however, I am not currently reviewing self-published books.)

March may be coming to a close, but it’s never too late to celebrate Women’s History Month! Join me tomorrow 3/23 @ 3pm ET for 7 of my favorite nonfiction women’s history books—we’ll be traveling from Ancient Greece to present-day Alabama, with a pit stop at the European witch hunts. See you then! đŸ§™đŸ»â€â™€ïž

(Pictured is Bernini’s sculpture of Medusa, 1630. She will be joining us along the way.)

New book releases: Do you find them exciting, or overwhelming?

In tomorrow's video, I'm chatting about my conflicted relationship with new releases, the "disposability" of literature, & the affect of algorithms on our reading--and what we may be able to do about it. I hope you'll join me, 2/17 @ 4pm ET!

Hey everyone! I’ve been busy working on my next video, the most serious one in a while
unfortunately, we have to talk about Neil Gaiman again. Rather, given how many prominent writers were revealed to be less than admirable people in 2024 alone, it’s time to tease out whether we should keep reading a problematic author’s work (short answer: it’s complicated as hell). This video is taking longer than usual because I want to make sure my script is as clear and cohesive as possible, but I believe it will be worth the wait to have this important discussion.

The video will go live Friday 1/31! In the meantime, you may want to check out my original video on Gaiman as an introduction. See you then! đŸ©”

Happy New Year everyone! 🎉 I hope your wintertime festivities of choice have brought you both joy and rest. Thank you for making my first full year on YouTube a memorable one! I learned and grew more than I thought possible one year ago, and I’m looking toward 2025 with excitement and ambition. My goal for this upcoming year is to bring you content that dives deeper into the art of literature and life as a reader, including more educational content, video essays, literary analysis, and creative writing advice. I also plan to start sharing more of my own writing
perhaps on Substack? Regardless, I hope 2025 brings you health, happiness, and many great reads đŸ©”. I’ll see you shortly, with my “best/worst” books of 2024!

Hey friends! I had hoped to put out a new video today
but seeing as I had my gallbladder removed on Monday and feel like I got hit by a freight train, I should probably focus on resting 😅. The new video is now scheduled for Saturday 12/21 @ 4pm ET, but until then you might enjoy my most recent video, in case you missed it!

Let’s talk book accessories! No doubt you’ve seen these products and more in holiday shopping guides
which you think is the most ridiculous?

If you’re feeling tempted by bookish “must haves” and Black Friday sales, tune in to tomorrow’s video and allow me to deinfluence you 👍

We’re another season down, so you know what that means—it’s time to tell you about every book I read this summer. Tune in tomorrow @ 2pm ET for 15 mini book reviews, spanning contemporary litfic to classic epics. This is the perfect video for those of you who like to have a lady yappin’ in the background while you do something else 😅. See you then!

Hello everyone! First of all, THANK YOU for all of your support on my most recent video (re: unschooling and literacy)—never in my dreams did I expect it to reach nearly 200k people, and bring in over 2,000 new community members! I’m immensely grateful for each and every one of you who made that happen 😭

Second, I’m hoping to bring you a new video this weekend, but due to some health issues interrupting my schedule, it may be a few days late. In the meantime, you might want to check out this short list of organizations and charities that support literacy and who welcome volunteers and donations. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and focuses on the US, so feel free to comment any more that you’re aware of!

Thank you again—I hope you’re well, and will see you in the next one! đŸ©”
