Four days before King Edward VII arrived in Dublin, the jewels at the heart of his visit were gone.
In July 1907, the ceremonial regalia of the Order of St Patrick, long known as the Irish Crown Jewels, vanished from a safe inside Dublin Castle. No forced lock. No broken door. Just an empty safe, found days before the King was due to preside over a ceremony that now could not go ahead. The scandal reached the highest levels of the establishment, the investigation quietly stalled, and more than a century later the jewels have never been recovered.
