प्रिय बेतवा, उफ़ वेत्रवती,
बेतवा, तुम वाकई एक अद्भुत नदी हो। “सुंदर” शब्द भी तुम्हारी प्रशंसा के लिए कुछ कम सा लगता है। नदियों की जो सामान्य विशेषताएँ होती हैं, उनके संदर्भ में तुम कुछ अलग ही हो। मेरी नज़र में नदी की एक स्पष्ट परिभाषा है, पर तुम्हारे मामले में कुछ और ही भिन्नता दिखाई देती है।
पहली बात तो यह कि तुम दक्षिण से उत्तर की ओर बहती हो, जो अपने आप में आश्चर्य जगाती है। दूसरी बात यह कि तुम इतने सुंदर पत्थरों को संग्रहित किए बैठी हो। खैर, नदियों को देखने की आदत हो गई है, इसलिए थोड़ा सा भी अंतर अनुभव में आ ही जाता है।
प्रिय बेतवा, ज़रा तुम ही देखो, तुम ने अपने किनारों के घाटों पर ओरछा को जगह दी है। शाम की ठंडी लहरों में तुम पूरा नगर अपने आँचल में भर लेती हो। राजाओं की छतरियों की विशाल परछाइयाँ जब सांझ में तुम्हारे जल पर ढलती हैं, तो एक अद्भुत चित्र सा बन जाता है। उसे देखने के लिए मैं भव्य छतरियों को पीछे छोड़कर तुम्हें पार कर सामने के किनारे पर आ गया हूँ।
कितना सुंदर अंतर है न! एक तरफ़ ओरछा का नगर – ऊँचे ऊँचे मंदिर, महल और राजसी छतरियाँ के साथ मानव जीवन की हलचल; और दूसरी तरफ़ यहाँ, वेत्रवती (बेतवा) के किनारे वन्य जीवन की हरीभरी प्राकृतिक दुनिया! यहाँ बेतवा के पत्थर, पक्षी, जानवर सब कुछ स्वतंत्र रूप से श्वास ले रहे हैं।
कुछ अंकोल और तेतर के पेड़, खाखरा और अन्य वृक्षों से सजी यह वनराशि, जहाँ जंगली तोते अपना शोरगुल मचा रहे हैं। काली कोयल की जोड़ी को तुम्हारे ऊपर उड़कर सामने के पेड़ पर बैठते देखा। और ये पतरंगे (तितलियाँ) बार-बार दर्शन क्यों दे रही हैं? मोर की टहुक भी कभी-कभी किसी डाली से गूँज उठती है।
यहाँ तुम्हारे किनारे से, शाम के समय जब सूर्य की आख़िरी किरणें विशाल छतरियों पर पड़ती हैं, तो एक अद्भुत अनुभव होता है। वे छतरियाँ अब थोड़ी काली और धुंधली हो गई हैं, फिर भी उनमें एक अनूठा सौंदर्य झलक रहा है। यहाँ से देखो तो सब कुछ कितना विशाल दिखता है। दोपहर में मैंने तुम्हें बहुत स्वच्छ देखा था, अब ये सफ़ेद बादल हल्की छाया डाल रहे हैं। चारों तरफ़ शांत सुंदरता और निश्छल निरवता छाई है। तुम्हारा खिलखिलाता संगीत थमता ही नहीं। मैं तुम्हारी लहरों में, धाराओं में बस बहता जा रहा हूँ… बहता जा रहा हूँ… अनंत तक…
