After all, four of the six board members were in his favour. But that day, February 24, 2026, the boardroom was tense. One man on the board, Noel Tata, had tough questions — about losses made by several companies in the $180 billion group, about its possible public listing, and what justified another term for Chandrasekaran as chairman. It was clear that Noel Tata was in no mood to give Chandrasekaran a walkover. At the end of the meeting at Bombay House, the headquarters of the Tata Group, Chandrasekaran proposed that the decision be deferred until a consensus was reached. He didn’t want the extension of his term to go through without the approval of Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, the family-run philanthropic arm that owns roughly two-thirds of Tata Sons.
