Army tries to restore order in #Nepal after protest violence intensifies

Soldiers with weapons guarding the main areas of #Kathmandu today (Sept 10) appeared to give some sense of control returning to the city that was overtaken by violence and chaos in previous days.

The #protests had grown increasingly violent yesterday (Sept 9) as demonstrators set fire to govt buildings and politicians’ homes and attacked some leaders.

The #primeminister resigned amid widening criticism of the country’s political elite, though it appeared to have little effect on the unrest.

#BREAKING | Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday, his aide Prakash Silwal said.

Anti-corruption demonstrators in Nepal defied an indefinite curfew today (Sept 9), clashing with police and shouting slogans against Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, a day after 19 people died in violent protests triggered by a social media ban.

Oli's govt lifted the social media ban after protests turned violent, killing 19 and injuring more than a 100 after police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters trying to storm parliament on Sept 8.

The unrest is the worst in decades in the poor Himalayan country that is wedged between India and China and has struggled with political instability and economic uncertainty since protests led to the abolition of its monarchy in 2008.
