Join me as we explore coffee around the world!

I started in coffee 20 years ago, before that I worked on movies for Hollywood. On this channel, we make videos about coffee from an industry insider perspective. While most coffee channels focus on gear reviews, we want to share with you the wider world of coffee from around the world.

In the real world, I run a little coffee company in Baltimore called Spro Coffee. In 2012, I won the first United States AeroPress Championship and was awarded Star Chefs Rising Star in 2014. I'm also an international representative for World Coffee Events where I get to judge coffee competitions around the world. Lately, I've been judging in faraway places like South Korea, Dubai, The Philippines, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, and Saudi Arabia.

So come join me on The Coffee Journey!

I hope all of you won't mind me speaking about this openly. Earlier today, I spotted a comment left by one of our viewers expressing thoughts on a subject we spoke about during Coffee Q&A 473. It was a longer comment that I skimmed over on my phone and wanted to reply when I had more time to give my thoughts. But now that I've finally had the chance to sit down to comment, I was unable to find the comment, but I have been thinking about it all day.

I don't think there's much debate on how Imperial Japan conducted their occupation across Asia during World War II. It was atrocious. Imperial Japan invaded and occupied the Korean peninsula, Inner Mongolia, parts of China, Burma, modern day Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Guinea and the Philippines in their pursuit of "Japanese Pan-Asianism".

Brutal murders, sexual enslavement of women, high death rates of prisoners of war, are amongst some of the war crimes committed - and it's not my intent to downplay or gloss over that history. Because of this, the scars and pain of the victims run deep and through the generations.

That being said, it is a history that, growing up in the United States, I was not made aware of in our educational system. I remember a time in the early 1990s when we went to one of my friends house with one of our friends in tow, and when his grandmother saw her, she cursed her up and down thinking that she was Japanese (she was Chinese). It was really then that I saw the scars left by the war.

I don't have much personal family history of the Japanese during World War II. Unlike my friend, my grandparents never came to America and I never had the opportunity to really know them or their experiences. And while the Imperal Japanese were indeed brutal during their occupation of the Philippines, my father's life was saved by a kind Japanese doctor who attended to him when he was an infant. I've been told he might not have survived had it not been for this doctor. I am here today because of that person.

During my life, I've met and been friends with many Japanese who have been kind, generous and loyal. They are not the people of their ancestors. However, I don't want you to think that I am not empathetic and understanding to the pain you feel as part of the history of your family and your people. My apologies for allowing that impression to be expressed. I am also thankful that you felt comfortable enough to express your feeling on this.

And for those who may not be aware of the war crimes committed during World War II and before, I think this podcast might give greater insight into those times:

Here's something that came up on my feed after today's livestream that might be of interest: Simply Good Coffee has announced a "plastic-free" version of their Olson brewer. And while they're pre-sale-ing it for $50 off, it's still a considerable $430. But here's some information on it - in case you're curious.
