According to history of the Esan people, the (Spirit Dance) of the Esan people is as old as humanity.
The Esan cultural spirit dance was not taught to the Esan people by mortals, but by reason of how powerful and mystical the Esan ancestors were, they could dance with the spirit. The Esan ancestors had an encounter with the spirits where they were dancing acrobatically, and in conjunction with the spirits, the Esan ancestors clapped and danced acrobatically along with the spirits, and after the encounter with the spirits by the Esan ancestors, the Esan ancestors taught their Esan people in the village square how to dance the spirit dance that they learnt from the spirits, and the name of the dance was called Igbabonelimhin. Since then, Igbabonelimhin became one of Esan people's cultural dance that is now our cultural heritage.
Today in Esanland, Esan people also have a cultural practice that is called 'Elimhin'oto. Elimihin'oto means the spirits of the Esan people aboriginal ancestors.
In Esan language, Igbabonelimhin means clapping and dancing acrobatically with the spirits. . . . SPIRITS DANCE! Do you want to dance with the spirits?. How mystical are you?
