Let’s look at how your cognitive dissonance might be showing up, based on your story and current reality:



1. Values and Social Norms
• In California, you likely lived in a culture focused on personal freedom, political correctness, tolerance, self-care, and privacy.
• In Russia, there’s more collectivism, directness, and a different understanding of freedom and personal boundaries.

The dissonance might sound like:

“What’s right — to always be tolerant and avoid conflict, or to speak bluntly and directly?”
“I’m used to respecting personal space, but here my distance might be seen as coldness.”



2. Efficiency and Development
• In the U.S., especially in California, productivity, startups, innovation, and customer service are emphasized.
• In Russia, you probably noticed rapid transformation — but with a different kind of service culture, business communication, and bureaucracy.

The dissonance might sound like:

“How is it possible to have world-class banking and roads here, but still experience long lines or outdated procedures in government offices?”
“Why does Russia seem ahead in some ways but very different in others?”


3. Identity and Belonging
• After 6 years in the U.S., especially if you absorbed their culture, you might have developed a partly American mindset.
• Upon returning to Russia, you may feel that society expects you to “be fully Russian” or think in a Russian way.

The dissonance might sound like:

“Am I Russian? An Americanized Russian? Or a global citizen?”
“Why don’t I feel fully at home in either place?”


4. Media vs. Reality
• In the U.S., Russia is often portrayed in a one-sided way — a place of aggression, restrictions, and authoritarianism.
• In Russia, you’re seeing rich culture, beautiful places, rapidly growing infrastructure, and people living normal and often very inspiring lives.

The dissonance might sound like:

“Why does the Western image of Russia not match what I’m seeing with my own eyes?”
“Who do I believe — the media or my personal experience?”



What to do with this?

Cognitive dissonance isn’t a problem — it’s a sign of growth. It means that:
• You see the complexity of the real world,
• You don’t want to live inside stereotypes,

Faster Payments System (FPS)
Instant transfers between banks using phone numbers 24/7 with zero fees, something still missing in most European countries and even the U.S.
Cashless economy
Over 80% of transactions in urban areas are cashless, with Russians heavily using smartphones and cards for payments.

Creation of the national payment system “Mir”
After Visa and Mastercard pulled out, Russia rapidly transitioned to its own payment system, fully functional and widely accepted.
SWIFT alternatives
The Bank of Russia developed and implemented SPFS (System for Transfer of Financial Messages) — a domestic alternative to SWIFT, enabling transaction autonomy within the country and with allied nations.
Import substitution in IT infrastructure
The exit of Western providers led to technological self-reliance, with domestic software, cloud solutions, and financial infrastructure filling the gap.
