Empire is defined by various sources around the world to be a political administrative center of a major power, who controls the affairs of other states, lands or territories. The major power influences other’s via religion, political might, military force and other instruments of state power. Empires hold sway over all and any people and things that fall under their territory.

Webster defines empire as “a major political unit having a territory of great extent or a number of territories or peoples under a single sovereign authority”.

Throughout the known history of our time, we have seen civilizations come and go. The first known idea of anything close to an empire is Babel. The first time recorded in history, where after the period of “Noah’s flood” Nimrod gathered people to build an edifice reaching into the heavens. Some people believe this ancient civilization was the precursor to the Sumerians, Chaldees, Babylonians, Medes, Persia, Ottomans and all other powers that controlled the ancient world from the Tigris-Euphrates zone.

Quickly, Sumerian empire, Hittite Empire, Egyptian Empire, Mycenaean Empire (Ancient Greece), Roman Empire, Mongolian Empire, Assyrian Empire, Macedonian Empire, Ottoman Empire, Phoenician empire (a combination of city states that dominated the Mediterranean seas), ancient Chinese empires through different dynasties, British Empire, French Empire, Anglo-Dutch Empire, Holy Roman Empire, and also all the lesser known but powerful kingdoms that can be referenced as Empires too. These all come to mind.
The peculiar histories of these ancient peoples, cultures and traditions ultimately revolved around spiritual beliefs which formed the basis for onward political and military conquests of other races, lands, cultures and religions.
No empire existed without first attempting to superimpose their religion on others. Either this or the idea that there is a spiritual exceptionalism to their own spiritual worship and existence.

Empires have existed as a form of sovereign exercise of own unique qualities over other peoples and territories.
Some kingdoms in their own brief histories and regions have also attempted or believed themselves to be empires in their own right, even though they never claimed the authority to control other peoples other than those who shared same ancestry with them. The Imperial Russians come to mind. Russia controlled Kiev, Minsk, Moscow, and most of the regions in the caucuses and down to the pacific. This does not make them less of an empire either.

However most empires have their sources. The Macedonian empire could never despise the preceding Mycenaean heritage that was the first known and acknowledged empire in Greece. The modern American empire owes its existence to the British empire’s expansions. The Romans owe their rise and adaption to the inventions and influence of their neighbors - Greece. They innovated and learnt.

Wherever in the world you see an existing or extinct empire, please remember that there was once a power that rose and ruled before it. Before Persia united the Medes and subjugated Babylon, the Babylonians were in power for about 200-400 years, maybe less. The Assyrians ruled before them. Before then, Egypt held sway, before Egypt, maybe Sumer.
Any attempt to ridicule the existence of other empires or kingdoms before your own is a ridiculous attempt to ignore, censor or invalidate the impossible.

This is a subtle message to those who would rather seek to elevate their own niche kingdoms and empires by erasing the existence of a pre-existing sovereign authority.
