I began formally advocating for accessibility and Inclusion after I had a workplace accident and became permanently disabled. It's amazing what you don't notice until you really start looking!
I started this channel intent on showing how great birding is, even with a disability. While I still love birding, my interest in accessibility and disability awareness has grown into a passion. I want us to be able to talk about the barriers we face everyday and work together to create some positive changes.

Hi EveryBody!
I'm looking for suggestions for how to do something. I got one of those hang up door storage things from Amazon. I thought I'd be able to put the hooks over the top of the door but....with nothing to hang on to when holding the hooks, my balance is shaky. Add to that having to tilt my head back and what that does to my regular back pain - let's just say it's a frustrating situation.
I can't do steps so a ladder won't work. Any ideas?

It's articles like this one where I have to wonder why more cities, especially cities like mine, don't do this? #accessiblehousing #affordableliving #seniors

I saw this real estate ad today and immediately, my mind got going. This is a restaurant here in Elliot Lake. Wouldn't it be cool to have this as an accessible place where seniors, the disabled community, and late discharges from the Sault and Sudbury hospitals could gather? Some place warm in the winter to wait for a bus (handilift or other) or a taxi or other ride. Somewhere safe. Somewhere with lights, an open door, and offered safety. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cold drinks, simple and easy meals in full and half portions, and pound cake, zucchini loaf or maybe shortbread and ginger cookies to nibble.
I don't know the everything of it but it damn well looks affordable. I mean, yes there's other costs and maybe I'm just dreaming out loud and research would need to be done, of course. But it's a cool thought - a place that's about people and warmth and safety. Belonging.
It should always be, IMO, Why can't we? instead of We can't. Please share your thoughts in the comments. #accessibility #inclusion #communitysafety #elliotlake

I've watched this video, start to finish, 3 times today. There are times when common sense seems to have become a lost skill. How does your city transit system address accessibility?

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in northern Ontario who is waiting - waiting to be told to get out, waiting to find out if they have a home, taking the initiative to seek safety and who are mourning what we are losing
The wildfire crisis shows what disabled people in northern Ontario already live every day: when provincial systems fail, we are left to fend for ourselves. The same underfunding that leaves communities without fire crews also leaves disabled residents without health care, transportation, or emergency planning. These are not separate issues — they are the same pattern of neglect.

This is a smart idea. It addresses the issues of affordable housing, personal safety and community building.
If we consider homelessness as including disabled people with low incomes who can not afford mainstream rentals and the difficulties in finding apartments that are built to be accessible, then this kind of project would impact an even larger pool of potential renters.
The idea of a communal kitchen is, I think, a great idea. Meals can be much more appetizing when they are shared, when they come with conversation. Breakfast becomes a chat about the weather or a news story and supper can be an event to look forward to, to get ready for. It also means settling in to watch a favourite program with a drink and something sweet before bed feels like a day well spent instead of more of the same.

This news story is another example of unsafe discharge practices. It's frightening to hear that the hospital doesn't track how many patients they discharge to hotels or what the criteria is that's used to make these decisions. And yet, another hospital was more than willing to help her get on the crisis list and took the time to ensure she was cared for until that happens.
