The 12 Team CFP format has been so refreshing to watch, but there is one part that I just can't quite understand.
Oregon (1), Georgia (2), Boise St (3), and Arizona St (4), all lost on their first game. This is surprising because on paper, these are the best four teams in college football. So why is it that they went 0/4 collectively? There are a couple of reasons that this might be the case.
One reason could be that teams with a bye week haven’t played a game in a long time. Take Boise State, for example. They won the Mountain West championship on December 6th, but their next game against Penn State wasn’t until December 31st which is 25 days later! This matters because the teams they’re playing have already had a chance to shake off the rust and get back into the rhythm of playing every week.
On top of this, we have to understand how the committee selected which teams are worthy of this first-round bye. The committee decided that if you win your league, then that is enough to justify being a top 4 team in the country. However, I believe that the committee failed to recognize that there is a major difference between being one of the best teams in College Football and simply winning your league. Every league has a different quality of opponents. I'm not sure how, but this realization somehow escaped everyone in the CFP committee.
I'm not mad at how the playoffs are turning out because you can tell that the energy surrounding the playoffs is at an all-time high. There have been so many football games over the Christmas/Holiday season and I love it. It's great to get to watch players who are somewhat under the radar play their hearts out as Cam Skattebo did for ASU. This is the first year that we haven’t seen the same teams in the final four. Gone are the days of undefeated teams not even getting a chance to compete (23' FSU). It feels like teams have to prove themselves as opposed to just hoping the CFB committee selects you to be a part of the playoff this time around.
What do you guys think about how the College Football Playoff so far?
