🎄It’s Release Day! 🎄

My second book, Christmas With a Tic is officially available to the world! I’m so excited and so nervous at the same time!

This story has so much of my heart poured into and it was incredible to get to write creatively again. Growing up, I never saw “me” in the books I read. I never saw TS portrayed authentically anywhere actually. So I decided to create it myself - wherever I could.

This book at its core is a love story. But it’s also a story about fear, acceptance, and learning to love the parts of ourselves we often want to hide. I hope I made the TS community proud with this one, because I’m certainly proud of it.

If you’d like to order your copy (or gift one to someone special!), you can find it here: a.co/d/gWIsVkf

We are just ONE WEEK away from release day and my excitement and the nerves are really starting to kick up! Help me get the word out by sharing this post and letting your friends and family know to pick up a copy on November 1st!

I’ve always longed to see Tourette Syndrome represented in all forms - writing, film, television, all of it. And I hope I did the TS community justice with this one. Let me know in the comments what you’re most excited about for release! And @hallmarkchannel when you’re ready to make your first Christmas movie with the main character having Tourette Syndrome, I think this would be a perfect fit! 😉

*side note, time got mixed up in my silly brain and last week I posted it 3 weeks away, but it was actually only two. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Trying to describe the feeling of suppressing or holding in tics is something that will always be incredibly hard to explain. This is the description I use in more recent years when I talk about it. Because for me, I feel the pressure build up in my body up through my shoulders and my neck and eventually it all comes exploding out and often leads to tic attacks.

It’s important to always remember that not everyone can suppress for any amount of time. And as I always say, it should NEVER be expected from someone with TS. Suppression is very difficult, it’s uncomfortable, and sometimes even painful.

With Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month starting tomorrow, I wanted to create a little something to get to know me (if you didn't already) and a small glimpse into my story of Tourette Syndrome and beyond. I've spent the last 28 years dedicated to spreading awareness about a condition society has been taught to laugh at and not take seriously. I've spent the last 28 years hoping to make a positive difference somehow, someway, and I hope that I have and I continue to do just that. Tourette Syndrome isn't all that I am, but it is a very big part of me and I'm so very thankful for who it has helped me become.

If you're new here, I invite you to follow along as I will be sharing TS information all month long, and I invite you to be curious and ask [genuine and honest] questions. And above all else, be kind. This is a safe space for this community. ♥

You know when I get these comments the most? When I talk about how I don’t want me or my community to be made fun of. Apparently, sticking up for myself and the people I love means I’m not grown or full of myself. It will never make sense to me. When I was diagnosed at seven years old, all I saw all over the media were jokes and stigmas about my disorder. I’m 35 years old now, and it’s been 28 years since my diagnosis, but still to this day, there is barely any more real representation in the media and in movies. The character with Tourette Syndrome is only there for a punch line, to be laughed at, and to be stigmatized. I can laugh at jokes just fine, even at my own expense. But when that’s all you see for 28 years, you start to wonder why no one seems to think that this disability is hard to live with. Everyone still wants a pass, and because of that, it can be difficult to “grow up and take a joke.” It’s so easy to say that when you’re not the one living with it.

My tics can be different every single day. They can be different every hour or even minute. But one thing that has always been a constant in my tic-filled life is some sort of neck tic. They’ve evolved and have grown more complex over the years, but my neck is the most overused muscle in my body. I have a permanent “click” in my neck whenever I turn it. from side to side because of it. I suffer from tension headaches at the base of my head where it meets my neck a lot. But I try not to show that all the time, so most people wouldn’t even realize that it’s happening.

I delete and block anyone who leaves comments like this. Some try to insinuate that it somehow proves that I’m faking. But really, it’s because I don’t want another person with TS or a Tic Disorder to see those comments and be scared to share their whole selves to the world. I don’t want their confidence beaten down before it even has a chance to be built up. I don’t want children with TS or Tic Disorders to grow up thinking that the world doesn’t believe in what they’ve struggled with for so long. And if I’m being really honest, even through the tough skin that I’ve built up, it still hurts. I still find myself getting a little nervous every time I see that I received a new comment, especially if it’s a video where I’m ticcing extra badly. I’m always expecting to be met with ugliness, and that’s honestly really sad.
