Simple Vs Complex Tics
People with Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders can have a wide range of tics and types of tics. Both simple and complex can take a big toll on the body because they are happening repeatedly throughout the day. Here are a few examples of what both of those types of tics are.

Coprolalia: what is it? Aside from what most movies, media, and television try to tell us, Coprolalia is much more than just a joke or a punchline. Real people live with this and it can be incredibly difficult. Everyone loves to sensationalize it but not to look at the person behind the “sensation.”

This isn’t to say that people with Tourette Syndrome aren’t ever happy or don’t have moments without tics. But it’s to show that there is often SO much more going on under the surface. A lot of the time we are trying to mask and appear “normal” to the outside world while fighting against our own bodies on the inside.

This is a phrase I say often when it comes to Tourette Syndrome. It's not something we asked for, and it's not something that we can make go away. Every day can be different, and even every few hours can be different within the same day. You just never know what you're going to get!

Not everyone is in the same place with their Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorder journey and that's okay. We want to send so much love to those individuals as well.

It's Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month!! As always, I will be kicking it up a notch with my posts to share more about Tourette Syndrome all month long! Today I wanted to start with the basics of what TS is, how you can help, and a few of my favorite pages/people to follow if you're not already doing so! Keep in mind, there are SO many advocates out there and so many that were not mentioned here that I love following as well. Let me know some of your favorites in the comments, and let me know what you're doing to celebrate and uplift the community this month!

A lot of people are under the misunderstanding that Tourette Syndrome looks the same every day for every person. But the truth is it can look different every day and even like the line on the bottom throughout the same day for the same person. It changes often and we never really know what’s going to happen next.

Tics should not be punished. They are uncontrollable, and trying to stop them or punish them out of a person will never work. It will almost always cause the tics to happen more - maybe not in the moment, but at some point, they tics will find a way to come out. Tics are not something a person can control, and they cannot be stopped.
