After two tense draws in the first two games, Magnus pulled off a win from a completely lost position in Game 3 - clutch like he always is! The GOAT of Chess as people call him, Magnus went on to win the 4th game as well to win the finals with a score of 3-1!

The Freestyle World Champion title was one of the only World titles which had eluded Magnus so far. And now he becomes the World Champion in Freestyle Chess as well! What an amazing achievement not only in the history of chess but sports as a whole - 21 World titles!

Guys, we have launched our first course on ChessRanga - it is called "Caro Kann from Scratch"! It is 6 hours 36 minutes long. It gives you all the insights into the world of Caro Kann and it is made with a very unique interactive technology!

And guess, what is the price of the course - just Rs.36! (US$0.43!) As it was launched on Sagar's 36th birthday we have decided to keep it just Rs.36.

Sagar has worked extremely hard on this course so that beginners and intermediate players (Elo 500 to 2000) can find something of value in this! It focuses on the Classical Variation (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3), the Advance Variation (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5) and the Exchange Variation (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5).

We would love if you can purchase the course, try it out and give us feedback. The idea is to build a website that can bring forth affordable chess courses to the people.

A big shoutout to two of the amazing ChessBase India programmers - Adarsh and Harsh, who have worked extremely hard on this project. Their picture is after they ran the Mumbai Marathon recently!

Here's the link of the course. It's available for people all across the globe: chessranga.com/courses/understanding-caro-kann-fro…

8th of February 2026 - the crowd in London and all across the world were treated to some amazing chess at the Speed Chess Championships 2026. Magnus Carlsen edged out Alireza Firouzja in the finals with a score of 15-12. The match was incredibly close, but Magnus always kept his calm, kept his lead and once again won the title.

The battle for the 3rd spot between Hikaru Nakamura and Denis Lazavik had a very interesting moment. The score was 13-12 in the favour of Denis and Hikaru was winning the final game. It meant that the score would be 13-13 and the match would go into tiebreaks.

But Hikaru blundered and allowed a perpetual. While the game was about to be drawn, and Hikaru was about to lose the match, he started to say, "But anyway it doesn't count." He meant that because the match timer had anyway turned 0, he had already lost the match. But it wasn't the case. In case Hikaru would have won the match even after the time had elapsed, he would have equalized the score. In the end it was Denis who took home the 3rd place.

On the previous day, Alireza Firouzja had edged out Hikaru Nakamura in the semi-finals, while Magnus Carlsen had got the better of Denis Lazavik. The Speed Chess Championships Finals 25-26 were held in London in front of a live audience. This made the entire show very exciting, not just for the fans but also the players. A big shout out to Chess.com for conducting this event in such a beautiful manner. Top 3 players qualify to the esports world cup that will be held later this year - Carlsen, Firouzja and Lazavik.

It was a beautiful start to the year 2026 for Nihal Sarin. The youngster from Kerala won the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid 2026 with a clear half point ahead of the field scoring 6.5/9. Nihal performed at an Elo of 2839 and won games against Aravindh, Niemann, Murzin, Vidit and Wesley So.

Nihal after winning the tournament, dedicated his win to his maternal grandfather AA Ummar, who passed away yesterday. It was extremely tough for Nihal, as his grandfather was the one who had taught him chess. He played today's games thinking about him.

Vishy Anand, the legend of Indian chess, finished sole second with 6.0/9. The third place went to 3 players Arjun Erigaisi, Wesley So, Hans Niemann - all of whom finished with 5.0/9.

Nihal's victory is very special because just a week before the event, he was not even in the list of participants. It was only when the World Champion D. Gukesh pulled out from the event, that Nihal got a chance to play here. And he made the chance count by winning with an amazing performance. Whenever Nihal wins, we are reminded that "Kind and good people do not always finish last! In fact they can even finish ahead of everyone else!"

Kudos to the Champ! It seems that the year 2026 will belong to Nihal Sarin! 😍
