Grandmaster Bibisara Assaubayeva is the Champion of Norway Chess Women 2026 with a round to spare! After a massive win in Round 8 against Divya Deshmukh, a draw in Round 9 in the Classical game against Anna Muzychuk was enough to win!

Bibisara wins the tournament with a massive score of 16.5/27 points - 4.5 points ahead of Anna Muzychuk in 2nd place, ensuring that no one can catch her in the final round! While the final round against Women's World Champion Ju Wenjun remains to be played for Bibisara, her job is done - she'll just try to get that icing on the cake with a win tomorrow.

It has been 16 years now that Magnus Carlsen is the highest-rated player in the world - he emerged as World no.1 in the January 2010 FIDE Rating list, and has since stayed there. A huge testimony to Magnus' unreal strength is, in his entire career there have only been 3 times he has lost twice to the same opponent in a classical tournament!

The first recorded instance we could find was in Linares-Morelia 2007 - a 6-player classical double Round Robin Tournament with the best players in the World. @vishy64theking Anand defeated Magnus with both colors, and went on to win the tournament a full point ahead of Magnus who finished 2nd!

In the Bilbao Masters Grand Slam Finals in 2008, it was Veselin Topalov who defeated Magnus with both colors. Topalov won the tournament!

Since then, there were no such events where Magnus lost to the same opponent twice in an classical event. That was until 2nd June, 2026 - Praggnanandhaa defeated Magnus Carlsen with both colors at Norway Chess 2026!

These stats speak to the amazing strength of Anand, Topalov, and Pragg - but perhaps more so about the incredible longevity of Magnus Carlsen! The World is looking forward to his last 2 classical games at Norway Chess - we'll see Magnus playing Classical Chess again at the FIDE Olympiad 2026 this September.

Praggnanandhaa takes down Magnus Carlsen again! After defeating Magnus with the White pieces in Round 4, Praggnanandhaa defeated the World no.1 with the Black pieces in Round 8 of Norway Chess 2026.

Pragg kept up the pressure on the board and the clock - and Magnus finally cracked! What a superb win for Praggnanandhaa - not many people can say they've defeated Magnus twice in Classical Chess in the same event! In fact this might be a historical achievement by Pragg. Even in world championships that Magnus has played, he has never lost more than 1 classical game! 😱

Going into the final 2 rounds, Pragg is on 12/24 points - just 2 points behind the leader Wesley So (14), 1 point behind Firouzja (13) and very much in the fight for the title!
