Another lovely 5-star review from someone I worked with for anxiety and intrusive thoughts:
“I have noticed a real improvement in how I respond to anxious thoughts, and I no longer feel as overwhelmed by them.”
For many people, progress with anxiety isn't about making sure an anxious thought never appears again. It's about learning to respond differently so those thoughts no longer have the same impact.
Thank you for sharing your experience.

When anxiety feels particularly strong, it's natural to immediately try to make it stop.
But constantly checking how anxious you feel, fighting the sensations or searching for reassurance can sometimes keep even more attention focused on the anxiety.
In my recently updated article, I look at some practical ways you can respond differently when anxiety feels strong in the moment.

Why do some thoughts get stuck in your mind?
Most thoughts come and go without us giving them much attention.
But when a thought makes you feel anxious, frightened or uncertain, you may start analysing it, checking it, trying to understand it or desperately trying to get rid of it.
And the more attention and significance you give the thought, the more 'stuck' it can start to feel.
After helping hundreds of people with anxiety in Ely, Newmarket and online, this is a pattern I see regularly.
In my latest anxiety article, I explain why this happens and share practical ways you can start changing how you respond when a thought won't seem to leave you alone.

Do you overthink before, during or after social situations?
You might worry about what to say beforehand, analyse how you're coming across while you're there and then replay conversations afterwards.
After helping hundreds of people with anxiety, one thing I've noticed is that this often isn't a lack of social ability. The same person may communicate completely naturally around people they trust.
Anxiety can turn your attention inwards, leaving you monitoring yourself and worrying about judgement rather than relaxing and being part of the conversation.
I've updated my guide to how to stop overthinking in social situations, including practical ways to reduce self-focus, post-event analysis and the pressure to get conversations "right".

Has anxiety quietly started deciding what you do - and what you avoid?
Avoiding something that makes you anxious usually brings immediate relief. Unfortunately, that relief can reinforce the belief that the situation really was something you needed to escape.
Over time, you might turn down invitations, avoid certain journeys, stay quiet in meetings or arrange more of your life around preventing anxiety.
I've updated my guide to anxiety and avoidance, including how the cycle develops, the safety behaviours you may not realise you're using, and practical ways to start rebuilding confidence.

Can anxiety cause shaking or trembling?
Shaky hands, trembling legs, a shaky voice or even the feeling that your whole body is vibrating can all occur when anxiety activates the body's fight-or-flight response.
For some people, the biggest problem then becomes worrying about the shaking itself, particularly if they're afraid somebody else will notice.
My latest anxiety article explains why trembling can happen, how it can become part of the anxiety cycle and what can help you feel calmer and more in control.

Could anxiety be causing your hot flushes?
Hot flushes aren't always linked to hormones or hot weather. Anxiety can also trigger sudden feelings of warmth, facial flushing and sweating as part of the body's natural fight-or-flight response.
If you've experienced this, it can be unsettling, especially if you don't understand why it's happening.
I've written a new article explaining why anxiety can cause hot flushes, why they often feel so alarming, and what can help.

Can Anxiety Cause Blurred Vision?
Many people are surprised to discover that anxiety doesn't just affect thoughts and feelings - it can also affect your eyesight.
Blurred vision, difficulty focusing and feeling as though things aren't quite right can all be frightening symptoms, especially if you don't realise anxiety can cause them.
The good news is that these changes are often part of your body's normal fight-or-flight response rather than a sign that something serious is wrong.
I've written a new article explaining:
- Why anxiety can affect your vision
- Why it often feels so frightening
- Why constantly checking your eyesight can accidentally make it feel worse
- What actually helps calm both your nervous system and the symptom itself
If you've ever wondered whether anxiety could be affecting your vision, I hope this helps reassure you.

Can anxiety make you feel sick?
Many people don't realise just how much anxiety can affect their stomach.
Feeling sick, losing your appetite, butterflies, stomach tension and nausea are all common physical symptoms of anxiety. The problem is that worrying about those symptoms often makes them even worse.
In my latest article I explain why anxiety affects the digestive system, why nausea can become a cycle, and what actually helps.
If you've ever wondered whether anxiety could be behind an unsettled stomach, this may help.

Does hot weather make your anxiety worse?
Many people notice increased anxiety during hot weather because heat creates physical sensations that closely resemble anxiety and panic.
I've recently written about this for the Ely Standard, and the full article explains why this happens and what you can do to feel calmer.
