Beyond the glittering relics We found a piece that stood without description A Shoe in a Cage The painted leather shoe hung from its heel in a dome shaped bird cage, standing in a sort of sad beauty. It was strange because it is hard to believe that one could take pity on an inanimate object. In that moment, the chaos of thousands of footsteps around the gallery froze and you could almost hear tears falling like rain on the big top. What was it trying to say? What was it trying to tell us? As we drove home I couldn’t get the image out of my head and something must have started to take life. One evening, many months later, Cabe and I were sitting on a couch in a small apartment in Nashville jamming and writing tunes. It had been somewhat of a discouraging week in show biz and the walls of the room almost seemed to be closing in. It was then that the shoe spoke. We wrote as quickly as we could and recorded the first draft. Just as quickly, the shoe was gone, and we couldn’t finish the song or decrypt the lyrics for the life of us. 👞 A few months after that, we had an upcoming show. Music was bringing a certain joy to our lives that is hard to find elsewhere, and finally, the end of the song became more clear to us. Hopefully you can find your own meaning as well!
