A landscape photographer from Bristol in the south west of the UK, documenting my photo trips. Videos are part ASMR, part travel diary, part video essay where I talk things through and analyse the compositions I find. You will often find me in the North West Highlands of Scotland and Snowdonia.

I'm pretty blown away by how nice Velvia is to edit in Photoshop. I was fully expecting the limitations to be jarring when I'm used to shooting RAW tiles with 4x the dynamic range, but these files were a joy to work with. Gonna test E100 next, but this is going to be hard to top

First roll of film came out ok. Going to avoid duplication this time around and trust my metering - although I'm going to be threading the needle with this roll cos I'm loading slide film tomorrow - hello 4 stops of dynamic range! 🎯

Thank you all for watching the latest series. I've just started constructing my latest Scotland trip - hopefully it won't take as long to edit as Antarctica did. I also wanted to introduce another project I'm working on. I've wanted to shoot with a 4x5 film camera for a while - the movements and the ability to prevent distortion is very appealing. But I thought it was prudent to learn to shoot film on a more affordable format - especially as I want to use unforgiving slide film! The 6x7 camera I've gone for is the Mamiya rb67. It's a chunky monkey and I went out for my first shoot with it this morning. You can follow the journey over on IG - and I'll also do a series which will span months, so don't hold your breath! Fear not though - I haven't gone full hipster, and I'll still be taking my trips with primarily digital kit... but I do like the look of this AI-generated moustache.

Thanks everyone who has watched the new series. Episode 2 is probably the film I'm most proud of so far: https://youtu.be/jU1XnYLEteU Third and final one out on Friday, but in the meantime, here are some photos from a recent trip to Scotland. Who can name the locations?

Thank you everyone for watching the last episode: https://youtu.be/rUqCHnKQCYg And hello new subscribers 👋 This weekend's episode will be the last of this series, but I am starting to look at video from Antarctica and working out whether I can spin a yarn without relying too heavily on voice overs. I'll get over my approach avoidance some time in the next week or two, but in the meantime, here are a few picture highlights: a mix of digital images, and film-on Portra 160 and Kodak gold.

Thank you all for watching my latest video. I notice in the analytics that most of my watchers are already subscribed, which is nice to see as that doesn't seem to be the case on a lot of channels.

I'm currently doing some AB testing on the thumbnail. Hopefully not too clickbaity, but I'm hoping that the new style is a bit clearer and gives more of a preview of the story. Let me know what you think: https://youtu.be/UEQWFtfLBFc

Thank you everyone for watching the first episode in my new series. If you haven't had a chance yet, let me know what you think: https://youtu.be/sFlHpqJIzoU?si=dbcND...

I'm busy preparing to fly to Buenos Aires on the way to Antarctica. I'm helping a friend film some interviews to publicise the citizen science work done on Antarctic cruises - a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I don't know what to expect from the trip photographically. I know there will be icebergs and wildlife-in-the-environment shots, but I'm hoping that I can get in some slower-paced landscape photography too. I will also attempt to record some video diaries, but again a group tour will be quite different to the contemplative introspection of my solo trips.

One thing I am certain of though: I can't wait to be back shooting in snow. I cut my teeth photographing wildlife in the parks surrounding Moscow when I lived there a decade ago and the photos I took remain some of my favourites.

Sunrise on Holywell Bay this morning. Another few images on the intray marked 'to edit.'

While I'm editing the videos and photos from trips, I tend to put all other camera-related work on the back-burner and I only snatch the odd morning of landscape photography here and there.

Despite the tendancy not to pick up my camera, last weekend, I did a favour for a friend and took photos of a jiu-jitsu seminar run by Adam Wardziński. It was refreshing taking photos of a different subject, and the tuition was so insightful, I kinda wish I'd had the gi on.

This is the time consuming part. When I get back from a trip, I offload all the footage into Premier: 908gb this time around. I start off with Sequences based on the days of the trip. These range from 1 hour's length of total footage to 5. I synchronise audio if I've used a lav for pieces to camera, orient videos that are upside down and scale them to 4k if I shot them at 5.3k or 1080. I then start rendering video previews for faster editing later on. The person who likes this process most is Sasha, who warms herself and sleeps on the exhaust from my CPU heat sync.

While I am in the field, I'm already thinking about story and visual flow, so the next set of Premier Sequences will be based on my notes I took during the trip. Editing video is an iterative process and I'll learn along the way whether I have the footage to stick to the plan. Often I pivot. At the moment, I have 7 episodes in mind.

Once I have a rough cut, I'll be adding music, recording voice overs and then moving on to a tight cut, before sound-scaping, colour grading and putting the finishing touches with visual effects. Each of these steps takes longer than you think, but I hope to get this series done before Christmas🎄

Well, Harris and Skye certainly delivered on atmosphere, as did Loch Lomond in the end; more on the latter in the vlog series that will accompany this trip. Also made use of a wee bit of sun to make some tea.

Here are a few quick edits of a few photos I've offloaded so far. Not sure what will take me longer, editing the videos or working my way through all the stills... Hopefully I'll get the series out this side of Christmas. Should be a goodun.
