Respect isn’t earned; connection is. We can disagree, be upset, not want to connect further, hate the actions of the other person and still show them respect. Even if we don’t feel that they deserve it. We can’t control how another person treats us, but we can absolutely control how we engage with them. Being disrespectful towards someone who was disrespectful towards us just perpetuates the disrespect. We can always choose to do better, regardless of whether or not the other person does.
Being respectful doesn’t mean you condone poor behavior. It simply means that you are choosing to not mimic that poor behavior. You can also choose to not foster a further connection with the person. We are always in control of how we show up and who we show up for. The 2 reminds us that if we want greater balance, unity and harmony within our lives, we have to show up in that way. Even when it is difficult. Emotional maturity is the greatest bridge towards peace and balance.
We can have peace and harmony even when we disagree because we are choosing to create it within our own life. So, if your response is always “respect is earned” it is likely that you are looking for an excuse and justification for showing up in the same disrespectful manner as the other person. Which will always bring the same results - an experience of disrespect. Connection, or deeper relationships, are a two-way street. However, Respect can always be shown regardless of how we feel about the other person. Often, our ability to show respect towards another is a pretty good indicator for how much we respect ourselves.
