OFF GRID w/ JLG Woodscapes

We’re Jason & Laura, entrepreneurs from Nebraska with a dream tucked away in the woods of Minnesota. While we don’t live at Moose Lodge full-time yet, we spend as much time there as possible! Working on projects, building memories, & soaking in the simple moments. Back in Nebraska, we stay busy running two businesses: landscaping and property management. The lodge is our breath of fresh air. Since we batch record during our trips north, you might notice our videos run a little behind real-time & we wish there were a better way! On this channel, you’ll find DIY builds, homestead progress, and a little chaos, all meant to inspire you to chase your own dreams. If you dream it, you can do it. You just have to start. We post new videos every Tuesday at 4pm, with surprise Friday videos. You’ll also meet our rescue pups, Herman & Greta, who are always part of the adventure. & yes, Herman wears pants! He was born with Spina Bifida and doesn’t have bathroom control (we get that question a lot!

OFF GRID w/ JLG Woodscapes

PART 2: Trip of a Lifetime ❤️🌲

We park & dive down yet another mountain. Mike has no fear, he is wild, he is feral & so grounded with Mother Nature. We love his sense of adventure & his knowledge of the land. He is also possibly part moose? He has a way of knowing where they will be & the way he naturally bellers loud like he truly knows how to communicate with the animals. His name Saskadrenaline couldn’t be more perfect to describe the adventure he has taken us on. Troy his son always in tow is equally as knowledgeable even at his young age. The passion for the animals, the hunt & the land is unmatched.
Now we sit cozied up in some pines with aspens sprinkled around us for cover & we wait for a moment where a giant moose will step out.
In the distance down the hill we spot a small bull weaving through the aspens- he stops & stares up. Surely he connot see us? He turns & meanders off. Then 20 minutes later we see another doing the same meandering around no cares but also choosing to not come up to us. Both amazing encounters again. Both thumbs down from Mike to harvest. It feels as though something else may happen in this spot, it’s magical.
We just dove farther down the mountain. I believe farther down than we have gone yet. Trying to emurse ourselves into the Moose. The ground beneath us covered in moss again. The wet earth below our feet just doesn’t even feel real. Right into their habitat we go. This morning feels amazing but I can’t help but wonder how I will carry my body & pack back up the mountain when the time comes.
Just when I thought we couldn’t go further down…. We did! We got to the bottom & crossed a small rushing beautiful creek. Hopscotching across pebbles & rocks to cross. Then it was back up the other side. We are 2.5 miles down & partially back up another mountain from the wheelers. It’s hard to stare up to where we came from but it’s also hard to not take in how breathtaking looking up is. I am in the most beautiful place on earth. Just out here & very here for the adventure.
After laying on the soft moss basking in the sun for about an hour it’s time to go. Now we hike back up approximately 2.5 miles equivalent to about 70 flights of stairs. It’s a long way up. So long. The blessing is the beauty around me & the ability to make the trip.
Coming back up was exactly as I thought it may be. One foot in front of the other up up up & up some more. Oh how it burns. All the way up happy positive thoughts of how lucky I am to be so able bodied to make the climb. Very happy to be back on top though.
Exhausted back at camp we fueled with good food- took a quick rest then headed out for another evening sit. I was grateful for a short somewhat flat walk in & out. We saw a yearling baby moose & lots of grizzly bear sign! Then it was back to our cots at camp.

Another day- I woke up more tired than usual today. Made a 30 mile road drive on the wheelers until we hit a mountain pass. When they originally referred to it, I did not understand the name. Now I get its name that I cannot reveal. We drove on the side of a mountain cliff edge feeling as though we could tumble off the side 1000s of yards down at any moment. Although scary & name fitting… it was beautiful.
Off the wheelers & another gorgeous 2 mile treacherous hike & here we sit on a Sunday morning in a peaceful mountain pine & spruce forest. Then we got up & hiked to another vantage point. It’s dreamy in here. Is this even real & am I really alive. My sore muscles tell me I am alive but it feels as though I am in some sort of fairytale land. The feeling I have here is that anything can change by the second. We just need a moment with a big moose. As quickly as it starts -it can be over. We have worked hard this week & just need an opportunity. While only Jason is shooting it feels like the quest & hunt belongs to all of us. It is a shared journey & experience.
I hear a moose grunting in the distance & praying he comes into Mikes calls.

My goodness a gift showed up. The magic of where we are & how he came in. My heart pounding & I was trembling. Pure adrenaline rushing through my body. This is the moment we waited for. The moment we worked so hard for. We put in the time & patience. A once in a lifetime moment. Jason made the perfect shot. Then I completely lost it- shaking, crying, my emotions come over me like a wave. Such an incredible experience & such respect for this miraculous moose. Something we will forever cherish. Meat that will feed our family and memories that stick. The way he majestically weaved through the pines below. Grunting & raking trees- before even seeing him, this one sounded different. This one was worth passing all the others for. It was incredible how we could briefly see him & then he would disappear. How such a large animal disappears? We could still hear him & then spot him before disappearing again. He was heading away, Mike called him back & he came in for the perfect shot, the perfect moment.
A moose that belongs to the 4 of us forever. Thrilled to have shared this experience with such an amazing family that were strangers a few weeks ago & now forever friends. This is what life is about.

Wow! After spending time admiring & getting to work quartering, the getting out was another adventure. The moose deep in the bottom & 2 water crossings. We hiked back up to grab a wheeler & wagon. Hiked back down following Mike, loaded the incredible amount of meat & beautiful paddles. 600 pounds of meat! It then poured rain on us as we made our way back up & out. We were soaked. I might mention I walked up that particular mountain twice…. Another 7 mile hike day. After hitting the top, we took a shortcut 10 mile wheeler ride to a gate where we then waited for Erin & Sky. As we waited- we basked in the sun that was now out. I have never been more grateful for that big ball in the sky. We were cold & wet. We ate all of our packed food, exhausted & thrilled. After a few hours because of a major lack in cell service they arrived & celebration was had. Grateful to be safe & warm- grateful for such a grand adventure & friends to share it with. Grateful for this animal we have so much respect for.

This was so much more than a hunting trip. It was a tent camping, offgrid, survival, hiking, backpacking, 4-wheeling, off-roading & sight seeing trip. I might add all of this with no cell service & it was a welcomed magical break from reality. One I will never forget.

OFF GRID w/ JLG Woodscapes

Story Time❤️🌲 Video coming this afternoon!! This was a trip of a lifetime!
Part 1:
Well on to another incredible adventure. This one a 30 hour drive from home & in another country. In a place where I have never felt more alive, the mountains all around me, the cool crisp air & the breathtaking beauty. We are up in the pines sprinkled with yellowing aspen staying in a wall tent by night & by the early dark of the morning 4-wheeling 40 miles in into the wilderness. We park, throw on our packs & hike another mile & a half to a place it feels we are the first humans to touch. Now we wait… will a beautiful majestic moose appear?
This trip is about so much more than the harvest, it’s about adventure, it’s about truly living, it’s about a dream come reality.
The family that is hosting us is incredible. A husband, a wife and their two young children. They are raising their kids wild & a bit feral in the most amazing way. Young kids that respect what’s asked of them & are a joy to communicate with. Camp life with them has been so fun & the hunting with them is incredible. I must also mention two camp dogs & a cat. I don’t think I have stopped smiling since arriving a few days ago. As I sit here I wonder how I will react to seeing such a giant animal? Something I have never encountered in the wild. Now we wait & finish this story later.

If I had any advice it would be to go on the adventure because you only get one life. Do things that make you feel alive- that start a fire in your heart & soul. This is it. This is your life.

We left our morning spot & 4 wheeled to another- Hiked in approximately a mile. Just when I thought things couldn’t get more beautiful my heart sets fire- a beautiful pine forest with the floor covered in soft moss. It’s a sensation like no other walking on it. So soft like walking on a bed of feather pillows. A small creek running through and a good climb up. Its stunning here at our new sit. Again we wait for a moose.
A moose came in. It was incredible his sound & size. Gorgeous but no shots as I believe he caught our wind. He also was very young. Such an amazing sight. Now we wait some more.
Next we move again, this time our shortest walk of the day- We settle in & 4 minutes later a small bull comes in. We had a blast watching him cross back & forth in a clearing. Then it was the long wheeler ride back to camp for a quick meal & back out we went for an evening sit. It was a cozy spot but no moose in sight. 7.5 miles hiked & 80 miles on a 4 wheeler this day comes to a close. I cannot wait for my cot.

Day 2 is upon us. I feel well rested & ready to take it on. Oddly my cot & sleeping bag set up in the tent is so cozy. It felt like crawling into a nest last night & gosh did I sleep so good. A quick 4 wheeler ride & a one mile descend down a mountain to a cozy overlook. It’s windy today but a beautiful morning. I sit hear now with much anticipation & also thinking we have to go back up that mountain at some point. I am a flatlander Nebraska gal most definitely not trained for this but goodness I love it.
I cannot help but be so happy & feel so incredibly blessed for this opportunity to just be. I am so small here & every problem in my life feels irrelevant. It’s the enamoring beauty all around me that is consuming my every thought.
We have not been here long and already spotted one 1000 yards away… then shortly after a very young bull popped out & walked 15 yards past us! Small but still mighty & huge. I couldn’t help but wonder because so close if he would charge us. My heart was pounding & I was shaking but let’s remember I am not even the hunter. Just shooting with a camera. A moment in time that forever holds space with me. We leave the spot of our 15 yard encounter & hike over another mile. Sometimes I have to pinch myself because this doesn’t even seem real, but then the pain in my body tells me it is. A trip that we have been planning since 2018 & it’s now 2025. We are doing it. Right now & it is incredible.
The climb out was exactly as I expected. Like climbing the steepest staircase straight up for over a mile! Added in was swimming through a sea of shrub brush not able to see the person walking 10 feet in front of me. Not sure what is next but happy to be back on the top.
As another day comes to and end, a few short 4-wheeler rides & 7 more miles hiked. We had truly amazing encounters. In the evening we dove off the side of another mountain into the most spectacular pine forest. So stunning & the smell was out of this world incredible. We sat and other than a cow moose bellering in the background the night came upon us. Then another very long hike up, up, up & out in the dark. Our tent is starting to feel like home. Systems in place to keep us warm & comfortable. Erin & Sky always in the cook tent or outside to happily greet us back. These girls are badass- they hold down the fort & do a darn good job.
Another morning & a 30 mile 4-wheeler ride mostly in the dark. I huddle behind Jason like a monkey on his back. It’s cold. But then we witness the most spectacular sunrise I have possibly ever seen. The bright fiery orange, vibrant blues & purple behind the scattered spruce. I see the mountains in the distance & it is not lost on me that god is here. He is an amazing god & we are so blessed to be in this moment.

OFF GRID w/ JLG Woodscapes

I felt the need to share this here- it will be awhile before the videos of this journey are released but hunter or not I believe a lot of you will appreciate my story. We have incredible respect for the animals we harvest. We are so incredibly blessed to be able to have this adventure right at Moose Lodge. Sometimes success is not about the harvest. Thank you all for being here❤️

Maybe my story ended yesterday. Truly an adventure & hunt of a lifetime. It starts with the beautiful place I am sitting. A boat trek across a large wild lake, cool fall air setting in & large untouched forest all around me. No signs or sounds of man just wildlife such as beavers behind me slapping in the water & trumpeter swans. Also a gray squirrel, a black squirrel & an occasional woodpecker. In all its beauty I will have spent hours & days here. Blessed with a husband & a son to help get me in place & come back at dark to retrieve me. Night one a 5 hour sit was fairly uneventful except the mass beauty all around me. Just at sunset my boys would come back for me & they saw my bear about 100 yards away on the shore line. I am so happy they got to witness such a beautiful site. Like a coastal bear of Alaska but this is Minnesota- an experience most will never witness & they will cherish forever. Day 2 we made the journey across at 9 am - I got settled & my boys headed back across the lake to the lodge. I am now alone. Around 10:30 there he was coming on a string straight towards me. He came in to about 20 yards away… a moment stuck in time that will forever hold space in my mind. I did not get a shot & he mozzied back into the thick timber. He was majestic & large. His head an incredible size. I beat myself up pretty bad about the missed opportunity & truly being too patient. I thought he was gone forever until a few hours later I caught a glimpse again, he was back! He walked so incredibly quiet you could not hear, but his black was so beaming as he walked to the right of my stand where I had no shots. He was 10 feet away from the base of my tree- my heart was pounding. He sat on his butt & began to lick the air so carefree. In that moment I was happy to have missed the first opportunity because this was an incredible encounter. Truly amazing. Then he was off again only for me to catch another glimpse a few hours later. Then the pouring rain settled in & I am not sure if I am stupid or stubborn or both? I sat for another 3 hours until my boat arrived. Truly the forest around me so enchanting- an incredible day. Maybe one of my best? Unforgettable for sure. The missed opportunity plays in my head over & over again. That is hunting. I am back again day 3 at 8:05am. Here I sit- maybe that’s the story? Maybe this is the end. I cannot help but be optimistic for what today may bring but we will see. But sometimes the hunt is just simply about the adventure because merely it’s all about waiting on a moment & I had several. Several small moments in time that made me feel very alive. An experience that is only mine.
The wind blew all day as a 12 hour sit in a tree comes to a close. No bear sighting today & a second book read. Came back to the lodge to enjoy Jason & his dad’s company as Hunter went home. But this is where the story ends. I hung out for hours with a bear in the wild.

Hunter’s story started a few days before mine at our incredible friends bear camp south a few hours of the lodge. His 3rd bear hunting season & finally his first bear ever & with a bow. I feel so blessed to have been there for the joy it brought him. I also feel blessed it gave him time to then trek up to the lodge for my story. A great week. A passing of days I will forever cherish with vivid memories.
