Her mom’s computer helped save an AI product.

No, seriously. 😂

I was interviewing the team behind 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐀𝐈 for my latest 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭 episode, and I asked about their biggest challenges.

I expected the usual:

Data.

Model performance.

Engineering.

Instead, their computer 𝒄𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒔.

Then one team member said:

“𝐈 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐦’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫.”

Her mom’s computer had 64GB of RAM—and it worked.

I laughed.

But this story says a lot about what building a real AI product actually looks like.

We see AI demos online and think:

Prompt → code → prototype → done.

𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝑰 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒔.

This team had just 𝟗𝟎 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 to ship. They had to work across product, engineering, data science, and UX, make constant tradeoffs, and even deal with losing a data scientist.
And they still shipped.

That’s the part of AI Product Management I wish more people talked about.

𝐀𝐈 𝐏𝐌 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐈.

It’s about solving messy problems, making decisions with incomplete information, and getting a team moving forward.

And sometimes…

It’s about finding out whether your mom’s computer can handle 𝟗 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬. 😂

I used to ask ChatGPT, “What should I do when my kid has a tantrum?”

And the answer was almost always:

“Stay calm. Be patient. Validate their feelings. Gentle parenting. 😌”

Okay, ChatGPT… I get it.

I 𝐝𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, but I started realizing that AI was giving me one school of thought over and over.

But every kid and every family is different.

So I decided to stop asking AI how to parent my kids.

Instead, I’m spending more time 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐲 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬.

Sometimes I’m calm and patient.
Sometimes… 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒔𝒐 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉.

But that’s parenting. And I want to trust my own intuition, too.

Today? Not always.

I’m seeing more senior PMs struggle to land jobs while junior PMs with just a few years of experience are getting hired.

Why?

𝐀𝐈 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

A senior PM may have 15+ years of product experience but zero hands-on AI experience.

Meanwhile, a junior PM may have 3 years of experience—but already knows how to build and launch AI products.

And guess who can win the job?

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐌.

This doesn’t mean senior PM experience is worthless.

It means the game has changed.

Your next career move shouldn’t be to compete with junior PMs.

17 years.

That’s how long it took me to become a U.S. citizen. 🇺🇸

I was stuck in China twice.
I went through multiple rounds of H-1B uncertainty.
My green card was delayed.
Lawyers told me no.

But on July 17, I stood in a room with 𝟒𝟎 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟐𝟑 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 and officially became a U.S. citizen.

I just shared the entire journey on YouTube — the setbacks, the emotions, and what helped me finally make it to the finish line.

But the biggest lesson from this journey isn't about immigration.

It’s about 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲.

I came to the U.S. with $𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭.

No connections.
No career waiting for me.

What I did have was the opportunity to 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠.

Today, that $800 immigrant is a PhD, a Director of Product, an entrepreneur, and someone who has helped thousands of people grow their careers.

𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮.

It means there is a path.

But you still have to walk it.

Invest in yourself.
Build skills.
Ask for help.
Keep going when someone tells you "no."

I see the same thing in people's careers.

Maybe you're trying to break into Product Management.
Maybe you've been laid off.
Maybe you're on an H-1B and worried about your next job.
Maybe AI is changing your industry and you're still waiting to learn it.

𝐖𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫.

You can't control the economy, immigration policies, layoffs, or hiring managers.

But you 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖'𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚.

🇺🇸 𝟭𝟳 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼, 𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗲.

Your life can look completely different too.

But you have to keep moving.
