“Why do you want to become a Product Manager?”

If you’ve ever been asked this in an interview, you already know—it’s not a simple question.

Most people give a generic answer.
And most people get filtered out because of it.

Here’s how I teach my students to answer it strategically 👇


When interviewers ask this, they’re not just asking why PM.

They’re really asking:

- Why are you making this career transition?
- Can you connect your past experience to this role?
- Do you actually understand what a PM does?

So instead of giving a vague answer, use this simple 3-part framework:


𝟏. 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞
Product Management sits at the intersection of technology + business.

You work with engineers to build products,
and with marketing/sales to bring them to market.

Then—connect it back to YOU.

Example:
If you were an engineer, don’t just say “I like business.”

Say:
“I’ve spent X years building products, and now I want to be involved not just in how we build—but what we build and why.”

That linkage is everything.


𝟐. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 & 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩
PMs are often called the “CEO of the product.”

Not because of authority—but because of responsibility.

You’re driving direction, aligning stakeholders, and making decisions with incomplete information.

So show evidence from your past:

- Did you lead initiatives?
- Did you work cross-functionally?
- Did you drive outcomes?

Make it clear you’re not starting from zero—you’re evolving.


𝟑. 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲
This is where most candidates fall short.

Great PMs don’t just build features.
They deeply understand customers.

Talk about:

- Times you advocated for users
- How you think about solving real problems
- Why being close to customers excites you

At the end of the day, a strong answer does 2 things:

✅ Proves you understand Product Management
✅ Sells your past experience as already relevant

Most candidates only do one.

Top candidates do both.

"Tell me about a time you failed."

Applied to 2,500 jobs… and still no offer?

Let’s be real—this isn’t about “bad luck.”
It’s your resume.

I reviewed a case recently:
➡️ 2,500 applications
➡️ ~10 interviews
➡️ 0 offers

That’s not a pipeline problem. That’s a positioning problem.

Recruiters spend 6~10 seconds scanning your resume.
If it doesn’t hit immediately → it’s gone.

Here are the biggest mistakes I see (and how to fix them):

Hiring managers don’t care what you did.
They care what you changed.

Ask yourself:

- Did I improve efficiency?
- Did I drive revenue or save cost?
- Did I improve customer experience?

If you can’t answer these → rewrite.


𝟐. 𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 ≠ 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞
Stop trying to “design” your resume.

- No photos
- No weird layouts
- No left-right imbalance

Clean. Simple. Easy to scan.

Your resume is not a portfolio—it’s a conversion tool.


𝟑. 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐣𝐨𝐛𝐬
This is a silent killer.

Applying to Product Manager roles with a consulting resume?
Immediate rejection.

Every role needs:

- Relevant experience
- Role-specific keywords
- Tailored positioning

If it doesn’t match → you don’t exist.

Be ruthless:

- Highlight relevant experience
- Cut or shrink the rest

Clarity > quantity.
