From Program Manager to AI Product Founder in 11 Weeks

Meet Kin Hai โ€” a seasoned Program Manager with 8+ years in Silicon Valley.

Despite all his credentials, Kin realized thereโ€™s a big difference between understanding AI and shipping AI products. He needed hands-on experience building real products.

Dr. Nancy Li - Director of Product

What really stops most people from becoming a Product Manager?

Itโ€™s not experience.
Itโ€™s not age.
Itโ€™s not background.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Itโ€™s confidence.

Most people ask the wrong question:
โŒ โ€œCan I become a Product Manager?โ€

The right question is:
โœ… โ€œThis is a MUST. So HOW do I make it happen?โ€

Once you decide itโ€™s a must, everything changes.

You stop debating yourself.
You start learning what product management actually is.
You identify your transferable skills.
You push yourself to the next levelโ€”step by step.

Thatโ€™s how weโ€™ve seen students:

- Who never imagined they could become a Meta Product Managerโ€”and did
- Who were 6 months pregnant, working as a Business Analystโ€”and transitioned into PM within 2 months

A new year doesnโ€™t change your life.
A decision does.

If 2026 is the year you break into Product Management,
make it a must, not a maybe.
Focus on the how, not the doubt.

โ€œI had ZERO PM experienceโ€”and got my first PM offer in 3 months.โ€

Meet Jill Gao.

Sheโ€™s now a Senior Product Manager at a crypto fintech startup.
But before PM, she spent years at Morgan Stanley as an equity registrator.

Like many career switchers, Jill:
- Loved tech and creative work
- Had no formal PM background
- Felt lost, anxious, and unsure if her past experience even mattered

Then she joined PMA.

Hereโ€™s what made the difference for her:

โœ… A clear job search strategy
Instead of applying everywhere, we focused Jillโ€™s search on fintech, where she could leverage her finance background.
โ†’ Result: her first PM offer within 3 months

โœ… Hands-on mentors
Our mentors helped her craft her stories, sharpen her answers, and build confidence through live sessions and feedback.

โœ… A real PM community
Mock interviews with other PMs-in-training meant her first real interview didnโ€™t feel like her first.
She wasnโ€™t aloneโ€”and that changed everything.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œHaving a community to go through the interview process with me made a huge difference.โ€

If youโ€™re:
- Aspiring to become a PM
- Worried your past experience is โ€œnot relevantโ€
- Feeling stuck or overwhelmed in your job search

Mock PM Interview: Designing a Grocery Store App

Ever wondered what a real product management interview looks like?

In our latest session, I had the pleasure of doing a mock interview with Crystal Song, a PM at YouTube (formerly at Intuit), who successfully transitioned from consulting into product management. She walked us through how to tackle a common interview challenge:

"Design an app for a grocery store."

Most PM interview questions like this are open-ended and tricky. Thereโ€™s no one-size-fits-all framework, which can make it hard to know where to start.

Hereโ€™s what we covered in the session:

1๏ธโƒฃ ๐‚๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ โ€“ identify key users (hippie shoppers vs. luxury shoppers) before jumping into features.

2๏ธโƒฃ ๐Œ๐š๐ฉ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฉ๐š๐ข๐ง ๐ฉ๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ โ€“ before, during, and after their store visit.

3๏ธโƒฃ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ณ๐ž ๐Œ๐•๐ ๐Ÿ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ โ€“ focus on high-value, low-effort solutions first. For this case:
- Personalized marketing catalog
- Smart product recommendations
- Fast & efficient checkout

Crystal demonstrated how to structure her thought process, balance user value vs. effort, and present a clear, actionable solutionโ€”all crucial for standing out in PM interviews.

๐Ÿ’ก Takeaway: ๐น๐‘œ๐‘๐‘ข๐‘  ๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘“๐‘–๐‘Ÿ๐‘ ๐‘ก, ๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘ง๐‘’ ๐‘คโ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ก ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘  ๐‘š๐‘œ๐‘ ๐‘ก, ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘˜ ๐‘’๐‘›๐‘‘-๐‘ก๐‘œ-๐‘’๐‘›๐‘‘. 1 in 3 women worldwide experience domestic violence or sexual abuse.

Let that sink in.

This is a silent crisis. Underreported. Unspoken. And for too long, unsolved.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ On the Product Insider Podcast, I sat down with Diwakar Sharma, CEO & co-founder of Kyrah AI, to talk about about how he built this AI product in our AI PM Bootcamp to detect emotional and psychological abuse earlyโ€”before it escalates.

Some facts that stopped me in my tracks:
- 80% of abuse starts with psychological control before becoming physical
- Only 1% of victims ever seek professional help
- Abuse doesnโ€™t discriminate by gender, career level, or social status
- Many victims donโ€™t even realize abuse is happeningโ€”it feels like โ€œnormal conflictโ€

๐Ÿ’ก What Kyrah AI is doing differently
- A private, AI-powered emotional safety tool
- Detects abusive patterns through journaling & conversation
- Built with strict safety guardrails, consent, and privacy by design
- Already gaining attention from nonprofits and the United Nations

This conversation was deeply personal for me.

Iโ€™ve always believed that being independent, career-driven, and โ€œstrongโ€ makes you immune.

I was wrong.

Abuse can happen to anyone. And recognizing the pattern early can save livesโ€”not just yours, but your childrenโ€™s too.

Kyrah AI is also a real example of how AI products with purpose can be built fast:
๐Ÿ”น From idea โ†’ MVP in ~3 months
๐Ÿ”นBuilt with a team of developers, designers, and data scientists in our AI PM Bootcamp
๐Ÿ”นEarly adopters before full launch
๐Ÿ”นReal-world impact, not just demos

If you believe technology should protect people, not just optimize metrics, this episode is for you.

Dr. Nancy Li - Director of Product

What to Expect in Salary When You Become a Director of Product ๐Ÿ’ธ

Letโ€™s break down what a Director of Product Management can earn at major tech companies across the U.S.

250K/year (according to PESA)
- ๐‘†๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘๐‘˜ ๐‘‚๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘ : Significant portion of total compensation, tied to team and company performance. High-performing teams can result in much higher payouts.
400K/year (base + ~$150K stock options)

At senior levels, your ๐ญ๐จ๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐š๐ฒ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ก๐ž๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ง๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐œ๐ค ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž, not just the base salary.

200K on average (can vary depending on stock allocation)
- ๐ต๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘ข๐‘  & ๐‘†๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘๐‘˜ ๐‘‚๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘ : Director-level bonuses can reach ~40% of base, and stock options grow significantly if the company performs well. For comparison, PMs or Senior PMs typically get ~20% bonus and smaller stock grants.
- ๐‘‡๐‘œ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘™ ๐ถ๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›: ~$250Kโ€“$300K/year

Most of a Director of Productโ€™s earnings are ๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž, making bonus and stock options a major part of total compensation.

Overall, whether youโ€™re on the West Coast or East Coast, moving into a Director of Product role means:
- Base salary is strong, but equity and bonuses drive most of your income
- Performance of your team and company significantly impacts total pay
- Compensation packages vary by location and company strategy

Dr. Nancy Li - Director of Product

Did you know a manager-level salary can be anywhere from $80K to $500K? ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Hereโ€™s why the range is so wide:

1๏ธโƒฃ Location matters

West Coast companies typically pay 30% more than East Coast ones, partly because the cost of living is higher.

2๏ธโƒฃ Company type matters

Big tech (FAANG: Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google) often offer stock options, which can grow quickly and significantly boost your total compensation.

3๏ธโƒฃ Experience & level matter

Entry-level managers earn very differently from directors or senior managers. Startups vs. established companies also make a big difference.

In short: your salary depends on location, company, level, and equity. If youโ€™re thinking about your next role, make sure to consider all these factors โ€” not just the base pay!

๐Ÿ’ก Pro tip: Always look at the total compensation package, including stock and bonuses, to really understand what youโ€™re earning.

Want to know what salary you should be aiming for?

I created a Product Manager Salary Table that gives you customized salary strategies based on your years of experience.
