I Finally Found Messaging & Email Apps That Don’t Sell My Data
Today, I spent my Sunday noon studying deeply about which messaging app and email service genuinely value user privacy. After going through multiple videos and articles, I have personally finalized Signal for messaging and ProtonMail ( go.getproton.me/aff_c?offer_id=7&aff_id=11754) for email.
Here’s why: as far as I have studied, using a service like Proton or Signal doesn’t allow targeted ads to appear later on Instagram or elsewhere, unlike WhatsApp or Gmail.
I’ve already taken some steps: I’ve updated my email for ecommerce and 10-minute delivery apps (BigBasket, Amazon, Flipkart) from Gmail to a ProtonMail alias. And honestly, I feel a lot more secure knowing my mail is not silently feeding into an ad machine.
Think about it:
• Have you ever spoken with someone on WhatsApp about a product or a trip, and then immediately seen an Instagram ad on the same thing? Coincidence? Hardly. That’s metadata-driven targeted advertising at work.
• Now imagine never having that happen again because Signal doesn’t track you and Proton makes its money from subscriptions, not ads.
If you value your privacy and don’t want your personal conversations or purchases turning into tomorrow’s Instagram reels or ads, I strongly encourage you to make the switch. The best time to claim back your privacy was yesterday. The second best is today.
I also checked the analytics on how much data different messaging apps collect.
On WhatsApp, the list is long — from contacts to usage patterns — and all of that is linked to your profile.
On Signal? Almost zero.
They don’t track, store, or use your data.
And yet, when I asked, more than 95% (Poll results of my WhatsApp channel) of you said WhatsApp is your go-to app to chat with friends.
It’s time to rethink.
Signal doesn’t interfere with your personal conversations or turn them into ads you see on Instagram later. That’s the level of privacy we all deserve.
