Hey all! Recently dropped a new montage -- this time highlighting David Fincher's unique obsession with phones in his movies / shows. Pretty proud of this one so would love for you all to check it out and share around. Cheers!
Happy nearly New Year! If you missed it, I dropped a new video earlier this week. Please let Jonny Greenwood take you through a microscopic look at the movies released this past year... Cheers! 🎉
As you may or may not have seen, I just released a new video!! Check it out if you haven't gotten around to it! I've loved all the comments and love so far. After so much time and effort dedicated to this one video, it's so rewarding to see the engagement. Please keep sharing this around!
Dear Diary, It's been a bit. I took a month off from working on this very ambitious Decade video, but I have recently jumped right back into it. My motivation was dwindling down in September so the break was definitely needed.
I'm doing my best to finish the video by the end of the year as that would be most fitting, but it seems never ending!! I have seen some other decade videos already pop up (or at least promos for some) so mine won't be the only one out there. It's always interesting to see what other people come up with, but I'm straying away from them until I deliver my own.
My free time is limited now so time management is very important to keep this project on track. It's been so exciting to work on something entirely on my own again; It's freeing and allows me to experiment however I like. I'm disciplining myself to only work on one sequence (out of six) at a time and not moving on until it's fully finished. Sequence one is wrapped, and two + three are not far behind. So excited to share what I've been cooking up!
Hope everyone reading this is well. If you haven't seen Parasite or The Lighthouse, get out there!! Make a road trip out of it if you have to... they're a breath of fresh air.
Dear Diary,
A warm welcome to you, September. The last month was a crazy string of defining events, including moving states and hunting jobs. This behemoth of a video (A Decade at the Movies) has been the only constant in my life, and boy has it soared.
It currently clocks in at eight minutes and forty-one seconds with six songs and too many movies. I think I’m losing my mind over the amount of work that has to be done, but I am thrilled to see it finally taking shape. It’s been experiment after experiment, this over that, finding the most unlikely combination of clips and bits that somehow work wonderfully together. It's been an absolute joy.
I learn a lot through these edits too. About pace and timing, thematic editing, telling a full story instead of just making a musical montage... So far, the themes that are making the biggest splash deal with parental relationships, life aspirations, and keeping love alive. It always ties back to love, doesn’t it?
As this is an encapsulation of an entire decade’s worth of movies, it’s been challenging to decide on the scope. Obviously the most celebrated are included, as well as plenty of indie and foreign cinema, but how about the big box office hits that aren’t necessarily good? Do they matter? I’ve come to the conclusion that they do. While yes, the majority of movies I am including are well-liked and enjoyed, I must also include some that are not. Because they are still part of the decade, memorable in their very own way. They may not be obvious in the edit, but I want to give them their own little moments too.
Finding quotes has been the largest obstacle. They're the streams of water that help the edit flow along. Unfortunately I have collected dozens and dozens of soundbites with only a few that actually end up working. While I was hoping to include some of the more well-known quotes of the decade, most of them have felt very out of place or just forced. So... still cracking that.
Anyway, I am so thrilled to share this project, and it’s barely even there. 25% finished, at most. I am a very sporadic editor so I’ll work on one section for around ten minutes and then another for two hours. The first ‘act’ is almost wrapped, I think that’s the closest part. Aside from the ending too, the rest is all over the place.
I think I’m gonna make these posts monthly.
Not only do they encourage me to keep on pushing and stay up way too late to edit, but I enjoy sharing the progress too. I edit as a lover of film and I cherish that I get to share that with you all too.
Dear Diary, The film count has risen to 362 films. And somehow, in a miraculous chain of events, I have just finished shuffling through 14 hours of footage. I didn't calculate that number until now, and now that I have, it's only confirmation that this is absolutely my most ambitious (and insane) editing project to date.
I have cut that 14 hour chunk down to a much more digestible 46 minutes. It's all been labeled and organized so now it's time to really get my hands dirty. However, I'm not through the red yet. There's more trailers to come, more movies to find that I overlooked, and more soundbites to track down. And not every movie I have will make it either. There will be some casualties and good movies left out. That's just the nature of editing.
My main problem right now, however, is music. I have constantly shifted through track upon track, liking the sound of one one day and the sound of another the next. It's been a battle of trying to incorporate the film music of the decade as well as having it all flow into each other seamlessly.
The speed at which I am going will soon hit a bump or two as well. I won't have as much free time as I do this very moment, and that's both exciting and scary. I hope to keep this energy up as montage editing gets my brain working in a very different way. It's the beauty of having an empty canvas to experiment on with no constraints but your own. Anything can happen, and editing tends to surprise you. I can't wait to see what happens.
