They buried more than they ever built out there.
A wagon would stop where somebody's wife took sick, or a child didn't make the winter, and they'd dig a grave by the trail and stand around it with their hats in their hands. No preacher for a hundred miles. No church house. No bell.
So somebody would start singing. Low at first. And by the second verse the whole company had joined in, because everybody knew the old hymns by heart — they'd carried them all the way from the hollows back home.
That was their church. A circle of tired people, a fresh grave, and an old song going up into the open sky.

They carried these mountains west with them.
When the Appalachian families loaded the wagons and went out past the Mississippi, they took a rifle, a plow, a Bible — and the hymns their grandmothers sang back in the hollows. Out there was no church house. No steeple, no organ, no preacher. Just the open sky, a fire burning low, and a few worn voices carrying the old songs across the dark.
That's this whole record. Ten new hymns written the old Appalachian way — fiddle, banjo, mandolin, autoharp, upright bass, and two plain voices. Nothing modern about them but the day they were written.
Put it on while you work. Let it play in the kitchen. Sing along if you know the way.
