Today's ‪@nytimes‬ reports on New York City Public Schools banning generative AI for students from 2-K through eighth grade for this school year, with limited use permitted starting in ninth grade. Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels revised the earlier guidance after thousands of parents petitioned, roughly 6,500 public comments came in, and 29 City Council members asked for a moratorium.

I want to sit with one thing.

The largest school district in the country is deciding that its students should not touch these tools until high school, at the same moment employers are requiring AI fluency as a hiring condition and refusing to recognize the self-taught version of it.

Access is not evenly distributed. Students in households and schools without restrictions will keep building fluency for the next four years. Students in this system will not. That is a credentialing pipeline forming in real time, along lines we can already see.
