Happy Saint Patrick's Day! 😄☘️ 🍀 The Story of Him is below. 👇

Saint Patrick was a 5th-century Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Much of what is known about Saint Patrick comes from the Declaration, which was allegedly written by Patrick himself. It is believed that he was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. His father was a Christian deacon and his grandfather a priest. According to the Declaration, at the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic Ireland.[19] It says that he spent six years there working as a shepherd and that during this time he found God. The Declaration says that God told Patrick to flee to the coast, where a ship would be waiting to take him home. After making his way home, Patrick went on to become a priest.[20]

According to tradition, Patrick returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. The Declaration says that he spent many years evangelising in the northern half of Ireland and converted thousands.

Tradition holds that he died on 17 March and was buried at Downpatrick. Over the following centuries, many legends grew up around Patrick and he became Ireland's foremost saint.

In times of war and deception, Sacred Scripture reminds us that God's sovereign power frustrates human schemes and fills believers with enduring hope through His steadfast love and the Holy Spirit.

A particularly fitting passage is from Psalm 33:10-12, 18-22 (NRSV-CE), which contrasts the futility of worldly powers with the security found in hoping in the Lord:

The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage.
...
Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
to deliver their soul from death,
and to keep them alive in famine.
Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and shield.
Our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.2

This psalm praises God's faithfulness amid chaos, echoing Romans 15:13: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."1 Even in oppression by the "deceitful and unjust" (Psalm 43:1), we are called to "hope in God" (Psalm 43:5).3

Pope Francis has echoed this in our war-weary world, urging us to revive hope born of faith to counter pessimism.
