Badami is a Buddhist site where sculptures of Sakyamuni Buddha, many Bodhisattvas, and various Buddhist symbols are found. Many scholars have visited and studied the site and have argued that it was a Buddhist center during the time of Emperor Asoka, who is traditionally associated with the construction of 84,000 stupas across his empire.
According to this view, the site was later converted into a Hindu temple complex by the Brahmanical system Manu's sons daughters ,Scholar Historians were subsequently interpreted as such by sections of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Called it's a Hindu Temple. Like that they put Critics of this interpretation argue that the Buddhist heritage of Badami has not received adequate recognition as Buddhist Heritage.
The famous Chinese Buddhist monk and traveler Yijing of the Tang Dynasty wrote about the Chola Empire in the 7th century CE. Some historical interpretations argue that the Cholas, who ruled from the 7th, 9th to the 13th centuries, maintained strong connections with Buddhism. Various travel accounts also mention Chola interactions with Sri Lanka and their role in maritime trade and cultural exchange.
It is argued that Brahmanical traditions often discouraged overseas travel, while dynasties such as the Cholas, Pandyas, and Satavahanas actively engaged in maritime trade. Because of their extensive sea routes and commercial networks, some researchers believe that these kingdoms played an important role in the spread of Buddhism to Sri Lanka and other parts of South and Southeast Asia. For this reason, they are sometimes described as great maritime powers.
Odisha was also connected to these maritime trade routes. As a result, Odisha contains extensive archaeological and historical evidence related to Buddhism. Furthermore, several inscriptions of Emperor Asoka indicate the presence and influence of Buddhism across regions of South India, including Karnataka and Odisha.
Badami is one of the most important historical places in the history of South India. Earlier, it was known as Vatapi, the capital of the Chalukyas of Badami. During its golden age, it was an important Buddhist center. The site contains temples and monuments associated with Buddhism. Among these, the four cave temples are particularly significant and were constructed between the 6th and 8th centuries CE.
There is a natural cavern between Cave II and Cave III. On a boulder below the rock shelter, unfinished figures of Padmapani Avalokitesvara and a defaced Buddha have been carved. Beside Cave IV, there is a small cave containing a major niche with scenes from Buddhist Jataka stories, including the Nalagiri and Sundarananda episodes.
A. Sundara notes that sculptures of Bodhisattva Maitreya, Padmapani, and a Buddha are present at the site. However, compared with the Hindu temples at Badami, these Buddhist figures suggest that Buddhism was not the dominant religious tradition during the reign of the Early Chalukyas. Nevertheless, the presence of these sculptures indicates the existence of Mahayana Buddhism at Badami.
The account of the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) records the presence of both Hinayana and Mahayana traditions at Badami. Since he documented these observations during his visit, there is a possibility that remains of the Hinayana tradition also existed at the site during that period.
