The long existence of an empire primarily requires, that its subjects can attain a good life through a reasonnable effort. This can be achieved through various political and economic systems, but it always requires certain basic rights to body, life, and property, and the laws must be stable and the taxes bearable and just.

Ironically, it is exactly the success of a society that causes its downfall. Over multiple generations, wealth and security always erode people's values and virtues. As a result, resources and cohesion decay and eventually the society crumbles.

Individual freedom can only exist as long as the members of a society use it responsibly. The uninhibited maximization of personal pleasure will inevitably end in a dictatorship.
