European Space Agency, ESA

Welcome to the YouTube channel of the European Space Agency - ESA.

ESA is Europe's gateway to space.
Its mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.

SPACE exploration is a collective journey.
This is why 23 European countries are pooling resources, putting Europe at the forefront of space science, technology and applications.

SPACE also means fun.
Our team produces clips with the best images of Earth and of the Universe, with astronauts and other space events for you to watch and share.

Catch a glittering glimpse of starbirth ✨

This young star cluster, Pismis 24, captured by the NASA/ESA/CSA James #Webb Space Telescope is home to a vibrant stellar nursery and one of the closest sites of massive star birth.

This region is one of the best places to explore the properties of hot young stars and how they evolve.

✅ Flyby success! Our #Juice spacecraft passed Venus at 07:28 CEST on 31 August.

Juice is built for the cold environment of the Jupiter system, and it’s far too hot at Venus to switch on its cameras. So, no photos this time, but our deep-space antenna in Spain tracked the spacecraft throughout the flyby.

1️⃣ This photo shows our deep-space antenna in Spain in communication with Juice during the flyby. Juice’s current location, Venus, and its destination, Jupiter, are both visible in the sky. 🛰️

3️⃣ & 4️⃣ Congratulations to the Juice operations team at ESA mission control in Germany for the smooth gravity assist that helped Juice pick up the speed required to get to Jupiter. 👏

🧃 Juice’s next planetary flyby will be at Earth in September 2026.

🆕 Webb has looked into the heart of a cosmic butterfly ✨🦋

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has revealed new details in the core of the Butterfly Nebula, NGC 6302. From the dense, dusty torus that surrounds the star hidden at the centre of the nebula to its outflowing jets, the Webb observations reveal many new discoveries that paint a never-before-seen portrait of a dynamic and structured planetary nebula.

🔥 Southern Europe is burning—again.

Southern Europe is once again in the grip of extreme summer heat. Soaring temperatures and bone-dry land have fuelled widespread wildfires, with the Iberian Peninsula among the regions hardest hit. Flames continue to sweep across parched landscapes, as these images show.

1️⃣ Sentinel-2 true-colour image: active fires rage across parched terrain in Spain, their smoke plumes thick and fast-moving.

2️⃣ Map of atmospheric carbon monoxide on 17 August: Wildfires don’t just burn—they pollute. Satellite data reveals elevated carbon monoxide levels, a serious threat to air quality and human health.

3️⃣ Sentinel-3 wide view of the Iberian Peninsula: smoke billows across Spain and Portugal, drifting into the Bay of Biscay and merging with Atlantic cloud systems.

4️⃣ Sentinel-2 false-colour image showing burnt scars and active fires in Portugal and Spain.

5️⃣ Map of fire hotspots on 17 August: each dot marks intense heat. Data from VIIRS shows the radiative power of fires across southern Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean.

Copernicus satellites and emergency mapping services help responders on the ground and inform climate action from above.
