Adulting is a rough road! You might as well enjoy it, right?!? Welcome to Jim Martin Does Things! I'm an academic, social scientist, writer, author, artist, part-time care giver, and guy who tries out things in life, makes mistakes, and (mostly) learns from them. I make content on all of the above.

Hi everyone! A quick note to let everyone know that I may not get an episode out Sunday morning - I bought a new computer and it's being a bit tricky. That said, I should have it up and running by tomorrow and a new episode out by either tomorrow night or Monday morning. In the meantime, enjoy this picture of Sam and I making trails through the dew-covered grass yesterday morning.

Hi folks! I'm back from a field trip in Idaho led by @illsey - it was an amazing experience. Here, I'm communing with some 2.8 billion year-old rock. Kind of puts things into perspective. As Shawn said "when this rock cooled, life on earth was composed of single-celled organisms and slimes".

Hi Everyone! I have a sizable list of potential topics for future shoots - but I thought I ask y'all what you'd like to see. Let me know which one of these you'd most like me to create a video about:

Spring is agonizingly close here in Nebraska. In that hopeful spirit, be sure to check out my new video about a garden project I started...(and finished!) last year. It goes up this Sunday morning (March 10) at 8am CT. OH YEAH - don't forget to "Spring Forward" Sunday night (if you live in the states that is).

My mother passed away last night (on Valentine's Day) after a long battle with dementia, preceded by a bewildering array of chronic health problems she confronted over the last 14 years. Thankfully, hers was a merciful ending.
Yet her death is not her legacy. She was a personal mentor to hundreds, a hero and inspiration to untold thousands. Many, including me, owe their lives to her in some way, debts both big and small. She was a force of nature, a legend. Like my father, she was a touchstone, a fixed point, a symbol of a ideal world and a set of values that many aspire to.
She was also a human being. She was maddeningly stubborn. She was funny as hell; acerbic, witty, and irreverent. She loved her family (especially her grandchildren), her dogs, her husband, and a collection of people typically rejected by polite society: the rebels, the outsiders, the unconventional folks that many shirk away from, step over or around, afraid of what others might think of such associations. She was dismissive of artifice and supposed superiority, intellectual or otherwise. She was prideful. Acceptance and inclusion were her hallmarks. She rarely cared what others thought - to her, that was your problem, not hers. She lived her life her way - always - despite the concerns and frustrations of all who loved her. She fought her demons with a titanic will of a thousand suns, showing a grit and determination that few can muster. In the end, it wasn't enough, but it doesn't matter.
Her death may be seen by some as the end of an era. I don't think that's the right way to see her life. Time is what we make of it and does what it wants regardless of our desires; change should be inevitable. Although I certainly haven't come to grips with her loss - and probably won't for a long time - I think we should admire the implacable shooting star she was to each of us. As someone once said: "it really didn't have to stop; it just kept on going".
For those who knew my mom - or if you wish you had - this video (and a few others that I'll share in coming weeks) may be helpful to you.
