Author Jon Atack, along with his son Sam, his assistant Spike, and his amazing guests, show how to spot, avoid, and overcome exploitative persuasion of all kinds and comment on authoritarian beliefs, and on culture and aesthetics. This channel also features Yuval Laor, Ph.D.'s groundbreaking work on belief, awe, and fervor, and interviews with many experts on authoritarian cults.
BANNING POLICY: while we value opposing viewpoints and welcome *polite* disagreement, we will NOT tolerate personal attacks, foul language, or hate speech. Typically we will issue a warning on the first offense, but suitably insulting material, obvious trolling, or a generally snotty attitude, will result in an immediate ban.
In short, if you can't be civil, you can't play.

Spike is joined by our friend Chris Shelton for a discussion on the top ten times the Star Trek crew visited – or was visited by – a cult-like group or civilization, and have a great geeky time comparing and contrasting the “Hollywood” idea of cult control with the real, societal pressures used to keep people compliant, docile, and wearing horrible, horrible, fish-shaped hats.

Jon is joined by his new friend Mark Laxer, survivor of a "New Age" cult led by Frederick Lenz, also known as Rama or Atamanda. They discuss his latest book, Ramatraumatrump, the ups and downs of recovery from high-control, abusive cults, the definition of the word cult, and why it's always better to have a husky puppy along with you for the ride.

We cannot cancel the past, though we don’t have to leave its triumphant monuments in place. Nor do we have to force a demand for purity on others. We all have to find our own beliefs, some life-denying, some life-affirming. And if you think Jon shoots off on too many tangents, wait until you hear Spike…

Scientology is pushing the brochure "How To Keep Yourself & Others Well,” but Scientology's scripture insists that contagious diseases are psychosomatic: not one of 270 test cases had caught a cold since becoming a Scientology ‘Clear’, a ‘laboratory fact’ according to Ron Hubbard’s 1950 founding text, Dianetics. Yuval joins Jon and Sam for this light-hearted look at Scientology’s latest contradiction in terms.

We wholeheartedly support the nonviolent @ movement and want to add that cops’ integrity also matters. In the present climate of racial tension, bigotry and ingrained injustice, we need to address the tribalism, misplaced loyalty, and persecution of whistleblowers in the law enforcement system. We should reward the good, name and shame the bad, and move forward into a more equitable state of justice for all.
In that spirit, we suggest the hashtag @ - to encourage people to hold the police of all countries to account, and create a world where the justice system works for the people, and not against us. We also advocate more public acknowledgement of the difficult and challenging work that many police officers do, and suggest that good police departments show the bad ones how to support the law rather than their law-breaking associates.
