The volatility of global oil prices caused by the US and Israel’s war on Iran is taking a toll on the most vulnerable people, by slowing or blocking food and medical aid from reaching them.
Now aid organisations are calling for a “humanitarian corridor” to be opened through the strait of Hormuz amid rocketing transportation costs.
Bob Kitchen, vice president for emergencies at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) called for “serious and immediate conversations about humanitarian corridors through the strait of Hormuz so, at the very least, we can get supplies that are currently stuck in humanitarian hubs through the strait to resupply.”

It was a historic day for King Charles, the first British monarch to address a joint session of Congress in 35 years, before enjoying a lavish dinner at the White House.
There were jokes, subtle digs and the supposedly apolitical monarch even appealed to Donald Trump on Nato and Ukraine – but how did the US president react?
Helen Pidd speaks to the Guardian columnist and host of Politics Weekly America, Jonathan Freedland

Watch: Self-deporting from Trump's America ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8LvD...
Americans have long joked about pretending to be Canadians when they’re abroad, just out of embarrassment at hailing from a country that’s notably arrogant or exceptionalist.
But recent developments in the US – its atmospherics, its internal divisions as well as its foreign policy – are of a different order of magnitude. The Guardian spoke with former Americans abroad on why they chose to renounce their citizenship.
For Mary, 73, it was the night of the 2016 election. For Paul, 55, it was Amy Coney Barrett’s swearing in to the supreme court. “Five minutes later, I was Googling ‘find a renunciation lawyer’,” Paul said. “And five minutes after that, I had sent an email to them.”
In the 00s, the numbers of US citizens renouncing were in the hundreds annually; since 2014, they’ve been in the thousands.
This is expected to be a bumper year (matching 2020’s 6,000-plus) because the US government’s charges have been reduced from $2,350 to $450.

Watch: Anywhere but Washington ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t31x6...
“Finally, here was a man who could make Americans feel good about themselves,” writes David Smith, the Guardian’s bureau chief in Washington, in his analysis of King Charles’s address to Congress that began with an eruption of cheers and a standing ovation on the floor and in the public gallery.
In a speech that will be read as a veiled plea to Donald Trump to return to the US’s traditional European alliances and restore his country’s role as a defender of liberal values, Charles addressed US lawmakers in the first such royal address for 35 years.

Watch: Nigel Farage Cameo videos show support for neo-Nazi event and far-right slogans ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C6AG...
Nigel Farage was given £5m by the crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne shortly before announcing he would stand in the 2024 British general election, the Guardian can reveal.
Farage had stated he did not intend to stand as a prospective MP but U-turned in June 2024, within weeks of receiving the personal gift from the Thailand-based businessman.
The Guardian put a series of questions to Farage and Harborne about the gift. Both pleaded for more time. At the time of publication, they had still not provided any formal comment.
Lawyers for Harborne said: “Your enquiry is replete with speculation and assumptions that do not appear to be grounded in any evidence.”
Reform did not respond.

Eight in 10 of the homes that are at high risk of flooding in England are now in towns and cities, according to analysis by the National Housing Federation (NHF), which said social housing tenants are disproportionately vulnerable to the financial cost.
Research found that 839,000 homes in urban areas are now classed as being at high risk of surface water flooding, a threefold increase since 2018.

The Nordic heatwave that pushed temperatures above 30C (86F) in the Arctic Circle in July was part of a record-breaking year that saw abnormal heat sear more than 95% of Europe, a report has found.
Parts of Scandinavia were scorched last summer by 21 days of punishingly hot weather that led to “tropical nights” in typically cool countries such as Norway, Sweden and Finland, according to a scientific report campaigners said showed “all the emergency warning lights are flashing red”.
The scientists found temperatures in Europe have risen by 0.56C per decade since the mid-1990s – faster than any other continent on the planet – due to the blanket of fossil fuel pollution covering the Earth.
