Surha Taal, Ballia.

A wetland shaped by 45 villages. A fisherman's livelihood. A bird's winter home. A name passed down through generations.

Today, it is also India's 100th Ramsar Site. And it sits right here, in the Ganga Basin.

That designation does not just honour one wetland. It lifts an entire network. The Ganga Basin now holds 35 Ramsar-recognised wetlands, spanning Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and beyond, making it one of the most significant wetland ecosystems on the planet.

Every monsoon, Surha Taal expands to nearly 25,000 hectares. Migratory birds arrive from across Central Asia. Fish multiply. Floodwaters find a home that is not a human settlement. This is what a living river basin looks like.

Namami Gange has always understood that you cannot clean a river without protecting what breathes around it - the wetlands, the sanctuaries, the village lakes that have held water and life for centuries.

Snakebite – Key Facts (India) 🐍

India: ~50,000 deaths/year (50% of global cases).
High-risk states: UP, AP, Bihar, Jharkhand, MP, Odisha.
Peak: Monsoon & harvest season.

Big Four snakes:

1. Common Krait – neurotoxic

2. Russell’s Viper – hemotoxic

3. Indian Cobra – neurotoxic

4. Saw-scaled Viper – hemotoxic

Prevention: Boots, torch, avoid floor sleeping.
First Aid: Keep calm, immobilize, hospital quickly; no cutting, sucking, ice, or tight tourniquet.
Treatment: Polyvalent Antivenom only.
WHO goal: Halve deaths by 2030

A rare species of the endangered primate 𝙎𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙇𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙨 have been reported in the Shantipur area on the Indo-Bhutan border in Chirang District, Assam.
