The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has reaffirmed its commitment to help people apply for and get their passports.

The Department's national spokesperson, Pasqually Zulu, has said this responding to a story of the temporal suspension of passport applications, which has been issued through a statement under The Malawi High Commission in London.

Zulu says while they value the efforts done by the diaspora community in enhancing social economic development of the country, all passport submission and processing services are still operational in all embassies.

He therefore called all Malawians to continue applying for their passports, saying the Department is still using onsite applications which are physical.

"For now, we are now done with the on-site system installation in all regions, service seekers are enjoying the service, we will now roll out the system to 6 strategic districts which will be followed by online system activation which will also involve all embassies to allow applicants to apply passports in the comfort of thier homes" Zulu said.

Timothy Mtambo, Vice President of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) and Commander-in-Chief of the Citizens for Transformation (CFT), has publicly called for transparency and integrity in forming political alliances as the country heads toward elections. His comments come amid growing tensions within AFORD over its recent decision to align with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Mtambo has strongly distanced himself from the AFORD-DPP alliance, stating that he cannot associate with a party he actively campaigned against in the 2020 elections. According to him, the DPP has not demonstrated any meaningful reform since its time in power, and aligning with it contradicts the values he stands for.

He further explained that his initial decision to join AFORD was rooted in his belief in Enoch Chihana’s leadership and the shared goal of rebuilding the party with integrity. Mtambo expressed disappointment that Chihana has now shifted direction by partnering with the DPP, a move Mtambo sees as a betrayal of the party's mission for meaningful change.

Accompanied by legal advisor Khwima Mchizi, who also serves as CFT’s director of legal affairs and board member, Mtambo emphasized that his movement will remain committed to transformation, people power, and ethical political leadership, regardless of party alliances.
