My name is Ollie and this channel is all about seeing history from the perspective of those that actually made it - ordinary everyday people - not those that reaped the benefits and the fame. I want to dig deep into the rich history of the North of England and beyond - from small local tales to the stories that changed the world.

Enjoying a nice long break from youtube you might notice, but can't get away from exploring abandoned stuff, like this old Berber village in the hills of Tunisia. Everyone (except a couple of families) left in the 1970s, but most buildings are at least 3 centuries old. The mosque is still looked after in case anyone ventures up there and needs to pray. And it's not on the tourist trails so I had the entire place to myself 😁

Calling all folks local to Manchester! Comment below with somewhere in the city region you think of as the worst place, and why. I want to do a video filming some of these places and see if they are as bad as we think/are told they are. Thanks!

Had a fun time being interviewed recently about Manchester and the North of England for the Chicago-based urbanist 'City-Dweller' podcast, which aims to uncover the stories of cities through the lives of people that live there.

In it I explained how I came to love the city, how it grew as a city through industrialisation and what it lacks because of that, city planning and transport problems, and the rapid pace of change in the city centre itself. But also how exciting it still is here and where the city can go in the future.

It's available to listen to for free on:

Apple Podcasts (podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ollie-learning-about…)

Spotify

It's also available wherever you usually get your podcasts.

A few months ago I was asked to appear on a Dutch travel series called '3 Op Reis' to talk about Manchester's history and how it has evolved over the years - with the lovely presenter Nienke de la Rive Box! Well, that episode has now aired in the Netherlands and can be viewed on the link below. The segment appeared in an episode mostly about Wales so I'm happy it made it in at all! I've also had such a lot of lovely messages from people who've seen it and encouraged me to share it on the channel.

Due to copyright on the programme, I can't upload the video itself, so the link is the best I can legally do. Unfortunately, there are no English subtitles on what Nienke says but you can kind of guess from the Dutch what she's talking about. All I will say is, I talked for a long time across a number of different parts of Manchester's history, but obviously they've edited it down to the bits about cotton, music and the city reinventing itself.

I've had trouble with the link myself so hopefully it works for you:

Hello! A lot of you have been letting me know that my latest videos haven't been showing up on your social media feeds, including one on Stonehenge Aerodrome and the giant cock and balls at Cerne Abbas. Both do seem to have unusually low views. I can only think that the YouTube algorithm has changed and is favouring different types of videos at the moment (more click baity spam probably).

In fact my latest video (a festival one filmed in July at Tolpuddle) wasn't even showing up if your searched directly for it, meaning it's only had 200 views on two weeks. I'm not sure why. The only thing I can think of is that it contains a lot of one type of flag which a lot of content creators are seeing suppressed at the moment, whenever they post about it. Comedian Tadhg Hickey has posted about this a lot. I hope that's not the case because i don't even mention it in my video. It's just there in the background.

Anyway, please enjoy. I'll keep an eye on the algorithm 😊

Been a long while since I did a video in the Northerners series, loooking at the lives of famous people from the North of England and Scotland (Dr James Niven, Len Johnson and Alfred Wainwright done so far). Let me know your thoughts on who should come next and I'll add it to the list 😊😊😊

Next video, hopefully out on Sunday, will see me attending my first battle reenactment (as a spectator... nobody would give me a gun) and see if I can finally be convinced that the English Civil War is part of history is actually quite interesting. Any suggestions for titles for the video would be most welcome as I'm a big fan of puns but struggling to make one with this. It's the Battle of Nantwich... Holly Holy Day.

Hello! Tonight I uploaded a video about the Antonine Wall in Scotland but unfortunately I used a bit of music in there that was copyrighted. So the video has gone! But fear not - I'll redo the video and upload again tomorrow (hopefully). To say sorry for the confusion, here's a blurry picture of me and the 'wall' in action!

Happy weekend all! My mate Louis at ‪@RingwayManchester‬ recently hit 100k YouTube subscribers and I'm super happy for him. He even let me prance around the Northern Quarter with his camera filming for his celebratory video. Check it out below:

No today is not my birthday, but I did recently hit an important milestone on my little channel and thought it was about time I celebrated! Thanks so much to every one of you gals and guys for watching my videos, and all the lovely and supportive comments, tips, and all-round good energy you all bring! What started out as a little hobby and an excuse to go out and have a bit of fun has become a real passion and 21,000 subscribers is not something I ever imagined I would have! Thanks especially to those of you who have been here from the very start, living near and far, commenting on my early videos and encouraging me to keep going! Cheers everyone once again, and I promise I've got some amazing videos and projects coming up in the next few weeks!
