Nepal's most successful domestic goalkeeper, Bishal Shrestha, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 33.
A four-time Martyr's Memorial A-Division League champion with Manang Marshyangdi Club and Machhindra FC, Shrestha leaves behind a distinguished career as one of Nepal's finest goalkeepers.

In an emotional farewell message, Shrestha thanked his coaches, clubs, teammates, supporters, media, and family for their support throughout his football journey and pledged to continue serving Nepali football in the future.
Shortly after announcing his retirement, Shrestha was appointed Vice-Chairperson of Nepal's National Sports Council (Rastriya Khelkud Parishad – RAKHEPA), beginning a new chapter of service to Nepali sports off the field.

Nepal women’s national team midfielder Preeti Rai is set to miss another SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 group-stage match, with the midfielder unavailable for Nepal’s clash against Sri Lanka on May 31 due to club commitments in the Cambodian Women’s League.
Preeti’s club, Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng, are scheduled to face Visakha FC on May 30, meaning the midfielder will only travel to Goa after the match.
As things stand, Preeti is expected to join the Nepal camp on May 31 and could become available from the semifinals onward if Nepal qualify.
The current FIFA women’s international window runs from June 1–9, meaning only the semifinal and final stages of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 fall within the official FIFA release period. The group-stage fixtures are being played outside the international window, similar to previous situations involving Nepali players during SAFF tournaments.
A similar case occurred during SAFF Women’s Championship 2024, when Sabitra Bhandari also missed group-stage matches due to overseas club duties before later joining the national team.

Wow! Nepali women’s team has officially started using GPS performance trackers during the closed camp ahead of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026.
The team is now training with STATSports GPS trackers — a high-performance technology company from Ireland, owned by Sony. The system is used by several top football clubs and national teams around the world including Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus, PSG, England and Brazil.
The GPS tracking system helps coaches and performance staff monitor player movement, sprint speed, workload, fitness levels and recovery during training sessions and matches.
Interestingly, Nepal had first introduced GPS tracking technology back in 2018 under ANFA using the PlayerTek system to modernize player performance analysis for the national team. However, the technology was not continued regularly afterwards.
Last year during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers, then head coach Patrick De Wilde had publicly criticized ANFA for not having GPS tracking systems to properly monitor player performance. Now, Nepal women’s football has finally taken a major modern step forward.
The SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 is scheduled to take place from May 25 to June 5 in Goa, India.

🚨 BREAKING:
In a Bangladeshi television interview, SAFF General Secretary Purushottam Kattel revealed that VAR (Video Assistant Referee) is planned to be introduced in the upcoming SAFF Championship 2026.
The tournament is expected to begin towards the end of September 2026 in Bangladesh, with the final schedule set to be announced soon.
However, the implementation of VAR will depend on technical and logistical readiness.
Meanwhile, Pakistan will not participate in the SAFF Women’s Championship in India this May due to political reasons, despite efforts from SAFF to ensure their inclusion according to General Secretary Purushottam Kattel.
There is, however, confidence that all member nations will take part in the men’s SAFF Championship 2026.
SAFF is also planning another edition next year to maintain continuity of the tournament.
