Welcome to the official channel of the North Sea Jazz Archive.
The annual North Sea Jazz Festival is the largest indoor music festival in the world, known globally as the event where the past, present and future of jazz are featured within three days. Next to a firm base of jazz many genres will pass by, such as blues, soul, funk, hip hop, world, pop and much more. Since the first edition in 1976 the festival grew to more than a thousand musicians, spread out over 150 performances and 90.000 visitors. Internationally renowned jazz legends performed, such as Lionel Hampton, Ray Charles and Miles Davis.

The festival has been recorded by Dutch public broadcasters since the early years.
Since 1992 Dutch public broadcaster NTR is responsible for recording and broadcasting the annual event for Dutch Television.
NTR has recorded more than 1.500 North Sea Jazz concerts, including topnames such as Ray Charles, Maceo Parker and James Brown.

We have created a Top 2000 playlist for all listeners to Dutch Radio 2. The Top 2000 is an annual hit list of Dutch NPO Radio 2, compiled by the public, with the very best songs of all time, mostly in English (about 88%), and is a tradition during Christmas and New Year's Eve, complete with the Top 2000 Café and many listener interaction.

D'Angelo gave a legendary concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2000, his first in the Netherlands, that was recorded in audio only and broadcast at the time by NTR Radio.
Now for the first time, this recoring is unearthed and released as an audio only concert on the North Sea Jazz Archive channel!
The pictures and thumbnails are from D'Angelo's concerts at North Sea Jazz in 2012 and 2015.

D’Angelo, a legendary R&B singer who helped pioneer the genre of music known as “neo-soul,” died Tuesday October 14, 2025, after a bout with cancer. He was 51.

The singer’s family confirmed his death in a statement to Variety. “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life…After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025. We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.” (Variety)

Today October 10, 2025, we remember the great soul singer Solomon Burke who died 15 years ago in the Netherlands on his way to a tour of the Netherlands. We publish his performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival edition, July 11, 2003 in his honour. Also check out the full concert on our channel.

American singer Gregory Porter received a lifetime achievement award yesterday, Monday October 6, 2025 at the Edison Jazz and Classical Music Awards, one of the most important Dutch music awards. Porter won the award in the Jazz category,.

Porter (53) flew especially to the Netherlands to accept the bronze statuette and also performed a show during the ceremony in Leusden. "Gregory Porter embraces influences of blues, reggae, and gospel with open arms in his music, thereby building a bridge between different cultures," the jury explained in their presentation to Porter. "He has the skill of translating personal stories into songs, expressing emotions that resonate worldwide."
