When I was given the privilege of recording one of Nick Drake’s songs for a Chrysalis Records compilation, in a conversation between Cally Callomon and Jeremy Lascelles, this Molly Drake song was also mentioned. I can’t quite remember why, but I fell for it instantly. For a moment, I thought it might even belong on one of my own albums. Instead, we tucked it away. Until now.
Years ago, my uncle gifted me a Molly Drake CD — one I regret to say I never listened to. This song, though, struck me in that deep, hidden place. God. I could see myself as poor old Mum, and suddenly I felt how we are all, in some way, guilty of taking our mothers’ dreams away, little by little. The sacrifices of mothers so often go unseen.
It’s a beautiful song, and somewhat tragic that the Drakes never witnessed how far their music would travel. But as it goes, true and good art lives forever.
Poor Mum is out on Chrysalis Records on October 1st and you can pre-save at NadiaReid.lnk.to/PRM.
Incredibly blessed to work with Lily Paris West and Marieke Macklon on the artwork for my new album. You can pre order Enter Now Brightness now at nadiareid.lnk.to/ENBYT.
I’m delighted to finally share that my fourth album, Enter Now Brightness, is set to release on February 7th, 2025 via @ChrysalisRecords (and Slow Time Records in New Zealand).
Written over three years—during which I also welcomed two beautiful babies—this album was brought to life with the mighty Tom Healy producing, D. James Goodwin mixing and mastering, and my beloved bandmates Sam Taylor, Richie Pickard, and Joe McCallum. (It’s been 12 years guys!!) ❤️❤️❤️
I’m beyond proud of what we’ve created together.
Today marks the release of an important single from the record, Baby Bright. Featuring the iconic Robyn Malcolm and DeeDee Borich in the video, with stunning backing vocals by Ben Lemi and horns by Finn Scholes— perfection. This song has been years in the making, with a melody that stayed with me from my last year of high school until its completion in a quiet room in Auckland in 2021.
If you feel moved by the music, I’d love for you to share the single, and if you’re excited about the album, your pre-orders would mean the world to me.
