Improving DCAF incident energy analysis for BESS


Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are central to managing energy supply and demand, particularly when combined with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, which can be intermittent. The biggest challenge to ensuring their safe and efficient operation is the lack of accurate methods to calculate DC Arc Flash Incident Energy. This case study by Nexamp Energy evaluated how battery chemistry affects short circuit behavior by modeling a DC BESS for a project in California.



The Transient DC Arc Flash solution provided by ETAP was also examined to highlight the usefulness of model validation and the importance of high-quality analysis methods to provide better accuracy in DCAF analysis for BESS.

Case Study: TVA uses Python and ETAP to study degraded voltage & motor start​

Recognizing that traditional approaches were lacking in efficiency, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) explored a new method to simulate degraded voltage relays (DVRS) at nuclear facilities. Their aim was to accelerate studies on protection compliance with federal design criteria capacity and capability requirements. By combining study cases, revisions, and configurations into repeatable studies, TVA was able to generate and evaluate their analysis results for the power plants more rapidly. The demonstration includes the use of an efficient solution using Python code with ETAP to run the studies and evaluate the resultant data.​
