A Ground Reality — A Responsibility for Us All

In a sensitive and naturally blessed region like Gilgit-Baltistan, a religious scholar dedicates his entire life to the reformation of society. He studies in renowned centers of learning such as Iran, Najaf, Qom, Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. After traveling thousands of miles, he returns to his region to deliver sermons, guidance, and intellectual leadership. His role in promoting Islamic values and ethics is of immense importance.

On the other hand, thousands of educated youth from Gilgit-Baltistan, who have graduated in fields like environmental science, public health, engineering, social sciences, and other modern disciplines from the world’s top universities, seem to have very limited engagement at the local level.

Gilgit-Baltistan is one of the world’s regions most affected by climate change. According to a UN report, nearly 3,000 of its more than 7,000 glaciers are melting rapidly. The area ranks among Pakistan’s most vulnerable regions in the Climate Risk Index, facing increasing threats such as floods, glacier bursts, soil erosion, and water scarcity.

Surprisingly, the voluntary participation of local experts and youth in areas like environment, health, education, and social reform is minimal. Even though over five environmental incidents were recorded in Gilgit-Baltistan in 2023 alone—causing human and financial losses—the lack of public awareness and absence of a collective, strategic response is worsening the threat.

It is now time to stop relying solely on the government or NGOs. Local youth, experts, and community leaders must voluntarily step up in their respective areas.

Awareness sessions on climate and environment

Free medical camps for public health

Research-based proposals on water management

Encouraging youth to research local issues


These actions can help protect the region from upcoming environmental crises.

If we keep our eyes closed, the time is not far when the beautiful valleys and villages of Gilgit-Baltistan will fall victim to environmental disasters—and no institution will be able to offer immediate relief.
