I'm so incredibly close to reaching the threshold to become a YouTube Partner Program member thanks to your support. Please help me make it just a little bit further by watching my latest post and sharing if you can! (or sharing any of mine that you happen to like). Again, thank you all for your amazing support!
I removed my post from yesterday where I said in the caption "autism in not a disorder, just like being left-handed isn't a disorder." I got a lot of comments both supportive and concerned about that phrasing. I wrote in the comments that:
"I do not mean that ASD should at all be equated with the struggles of being left-handed. Just the concept that so much of society is built in such a way that make things into struggles that should be strengths or non-issues at all. Outside of that, however, are many things that even if society was made differently, would still make life difficult in undesired ways. I'm not wrong for wanting my brain to do differently, but I don't personally wanna say 'do better', just different. ASD IS a disorder, but that 'order' so many did not sign up for."
Because of this post, I had a lot of great discussion with you all and I would hope people would go to the comments to see that discussion and nuance and while I support the message there, I took the video down for two specific reasons, thanks to @jessiehomans8309 thoughtful comment. First, if someone were to repost that video, it would ONLY have the caption and none of the context and that phrase alone could be misconstrued and even misused. Second, ASD's classification as a 'disorder' is very important as it allows people diagnosed to qualify for assistance and services. That is especially important in our current climate.
Ultimately, I think the word 'disorder' is incredibly outdated and a misrepresentation of so many things people struggle with, but that's a battle that will need to continue to be fought alongside many other issues around mental health in ways more significant than a short caption.
I'll post it again today with a different caption. Thank you all again for your thoughtful and kind responses and willingness to keep the conversation going.
I want to continue the discussion too despite the video being gone, so if there's more you believe needs to be said about this or just want to share something you feel, please comment and let's talk about it.
p.s. I post on all the platforms, and I've gotta be honest, this one is my favorite because of you all. I genuinely get the nicest and most thoughtful comments on this platform more than any other. Thank you!
My latest single "i am strong" ("i am not worthless") is officially available on all platforms!!
I had no intentions of releasing anything like this as recent as a month ago, but you all made this song bigger than me and I'm happy to say it'll be available very soon. Thank you!
