*AMAR Reflections #7*: The dunya deceives and the hereafter reveals.
Are you building your life in a world that will one day bury you, while being heedless of your real home that awaits you forever? Is your wealth gripping your heart and weighing it down or does it rest lightly in your hand where it belongs? Do you take what suffices you or are you always seeking more? Can you truly say you are fully content?
The dunya with all of its glitter and glamour calls us to comfort, wealth and success. We traverse this world looking for the next big thing, forgetting a truth we are hesitant to accept, nothing here lasts. This dunya is finite and one day, it will come to an end.
(Asceticism and the condemnation of the transient worldly life) *
A Muslim must be one who is known to possess the noble quality of Asceticism and detachment from the deception of the dunya. We must take the prophets and our righteous predecessors as our examples and be cognisant of the fact that it is the path to success.
*The Quran reminds us of the fleeting nature of this world:*
Surah Al-Ankabūt (29:64)
“The life of this world is nothing but amusement and play; the Hereafter is the true, everlasting life.”
This is your Lord, the one who says about himself:
وَمَنْ أَصْدَقُ مِنَ اللَّهِ قِيلًا
— Surah An-Nisā’ (4:122)“And who is more truthful in statement than Allah?”
The one who created you, clothes you, feeds you and has protected you all these years telling you, directly, to not be deceived by this world. Will you take heed?
*This Hadith shows us the path of the Prophet ﷺ and the righteous ones:*
Do you want to be from the honoured slaves that Allah loves? Would you like your life to be filled with light and blessings due to that love? Then ponder over this Hadith:
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ:
“O Messenger of Allah, tell me something that will make Allah love me and people love me.”
He ﷺ said:
“Be ascetic in the world and Allah will love you; be ascetic regarding what people have, and people will love you.”
— Sunan Ibn Mājah (4102), ḥasan according to al-Albānī
This Hadith is instrumental in highlighting the immense benefits one will reap if they posses the noble quality of being ascetic. It is a blueprint for success for anyone who comprehends the wisdom behind this Hadith.
*The words of the poets illuminate the wisdom of the past:*
Abu al-‘Atāhiyya (أبو العتاهية) was a famous early Islamic poet known for his ascetic poetry and deep moral reflections. Let us reflect over these lines that are attributed to him:
أرى الدنيا لمن هي في يديه
عذابا كلما كثرت لديه
تهين المكرمين لها بصُغْر
وتكرم كل من هانت عليه
إذا استغنيت عن شيء فدعه
وخذ ما أنت محتاج إليه
*English translation:*
I see the dunya (world) as a tormentFor those in whose hands it lies. The more they have, the more it belittles them,While it honors those who treat it lightly.
If you no longer need something, leave it behind,And take only what you truly need.
These beautiful lines of poetry illustrate the divergence in perspective between us and our righteous predecessors. We define the pinnacle of success as wealth and accolades in this dunya, whereas they viewed it as torment and tribulation. It is time we shift our perspective and take inspiration from the righteous ones who preceded us.
Pause. Reflect. Ask yourself: Are you living for the glittering, temporary world or for the home that will never fade?
When the veil lifts, and the dunya’s illusions fall away, only one truth will remain: *what have you sent ahead for the home you will never leave?*

What if the peace you have been relentlessly searching for is already waiting you? On the other side of a quiet, secluded, private moment with Allah.
The path of seclusion and solitude isn’t a contemporary finding, but rather, the path has already been mapped out for us in our religion, in both the Quran and the sunnah. It is for those who seek peace in a world full of noise. For those who wish to deepen and enhance their self reflection, sharpen focus on worship and elevate their moral character.
Seclusion cultivates spiritual elevation, guards and protects your heart and fortifies your faith.
Throughout history Allah has shown us that moments of solitude can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Let us ponder over the noble examples of seclusion that Allah mentions in the Quran, and extract guidance that we can implement in our lives.
Ibrāhīm (عليه السلام)
He said with strength and clarity.
“وَأَعْتَزِلُكُمْ” — “I will withdraw from you”
and in that withdrawal, Allah gave him righteous offspring and prophethood.
Maryam (عليها السلام)
She withdrew to a quiet place, far from the eyes of people, and in her solitude, Allah sent Jibril, honored her, strengthened her, and gave her a miracle
Ashab al-Kahf (The People of the Cave)
They fled to a cave with nothing but their faith, and in the silence of that cave, Allah covered them with divine mercyand wrote their story eternally in the Qur’an.
Solitude was not a punishment. It was a gift, a sanctuary and a turning point in their lives.
The illustrious scholar, Ibn Al-Qayyim beautifully and succinctly captures the spiritual impact that solitude has on the heart when he says:
“أجمل أوقات القلب هي لحظاته مع الله وحده، خاليًا عن الملهيات، يذكُر الله، ويبكي سرًّا، ويعود إليه.”
“Some of the best times for the heart are those moments when it is alone with Allah, away from distractions, remembering Him, crying in secret, and turning toward Him.”
(Madarij al-Salikin)
*A Hadith that captures the true beauty of private worship:*
Seclusion is considered a highly meritorious act in our religion and the benefits are endless. Let us reflect over this heart touching Hadith:
عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "سبعة يظلهم الله في ظله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله: … ورجل ذكر الله خالياً ففاضت عيناه"
Abu Huraira (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Seven people will be given shade by Allah on the Day when there is no shade except His shade… and a man who remembers Allah in private, and his eyes overflow with tears.”
This Hadith highlights the importance and great virtue that is found in private remembrance of Allah. The mention of the person being in a state of seclusion reinforces that reflection in private is an undeniable sign of a believer’s sincerity and mark of their humility.
In light of this, *TIME* is undoubtedly the greatest asset a person can possess and its value should be reflected in how you choose to spend it. Are you one who honours their time and is diligent in safeguarding their most valuable asset? Or are you one who is always found mixing with others with no benefit? How do you expect to achieve your goals in the dunya and the Akhirah if you accept every single invitation?
The poet he said:
والوقتُ أنفَسُ ماعُنيتَ بحفظه
وأراه أسهلَ ماعليك يضيعُ
“Time is the most precious thing you’re tasked with guarding,
yet I see it is the easiest thing for you to waste.”
These few lines of poetry capture a striking reality, every moment that passes is never coming back. In moments of solitude, we realise how much of our precious time we spend on what does not benefit us. Solitude is a chance to reflect, to be diligent moving forward, focusing on what matters and spending the time we have left wisely.
Learn to be alone. Away from the noise of people but fully present with Allah. Let the world wait, your soul cannot. In solitude you discover your truest peace and through it you achieve your heart’s greatest growth.
