Let’s get one thing straight: most of us don’t wake up one morning with a bolt of lightning and a booming voice from the heavens announcing, “YOUR PURPOSE IS TO BECOME A WORLD-FAMOUS ORIGAMI MASTER.” (If that did happen to you, please write a book—I’d read it.)

For the rest of us mere mortals, finding purpose feels a lot like losing your phone: you know it’s somewhere, probably under a pile of laundry or your own self-doubt.

I once met someone who said they found their purpose on a silent meditation retreat. After seven days of not speaking, they realized they wanted to open a food truck. I respect that. But also, I’m not sure I could go seven minutes without whispering, “Is it lunch yet?”

The truth is, purpose isn’t always loud and dramatic. Sometimes, it’s a quiet nudge. It’s what excites you, what bothers you enough to want to change it, what keeps you curious. It’s the thing you do when no one’s watching—and you don’t totally suck at it.

It might look like volunteering on weekends. Or finally starting that side project that’s been living rent-free in your brain. Or simply being the kind of person who listens when someone’s having a rough day. Purpose doesn’t always wear a cape. Sometimes, it wears pajamas and has a coffee stain on its shirt.

Here’s the secret: you don’t have to have it all figured out. Purpose isn’t a destination. It’s more like Wi-Fi—you don’t always see it, but when you’re connected, everything just works a little better.

So don’t wait for the perfect moment. Don’t wait to be "ready." Try things. Fail gloriously. Laugh at yourself. Adjust. Keep going.

And if all else fails—start with figuring out what doesn’t feel like purpose. That’s a pretty good GPS too.
