Lives Before Us
Before the Hubble Space Telescope changed our view of the universe, someone had to help turn a scientific hope into a program NASA could actually build.
Nancy Grace Roman joined the young NASA in 1959 and became its first Chief of Astronomy. She brought scientists and engineers together, helped define requirements for a large space telescope, and built support for the work across years of institutional effort.
Roman described her own part with care: “My role in Hubble was as program scientist.” Hubble was the achievement of a vast collaboration—not one person—but her work helped make that collaboration possible.
In 2020, NASA named the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope in her honor.
