'Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday' is simply a better film than 'Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare'. How have I come to this conclusion, you ask? Because I spent 25 years 'hating' The Final Friday, only to realize, somewhere around 2017, that I actually loved the film; I can watch it now with no issues whatsoever and have a great time doing so. That is not the case with Freddy’s Dead. Even now, 35 years later, my distaste for that film hasn’t wained one bit; a truly boring slog of a film, with one of the worst ‘endings’ for Freddy ever seen within the franchise, especially one supposedly meant to be permanent. However, I did in fact get to see both of these films in theaters when they first released, which I guess is pretty cool. Believe it or not, I was 4 years old when my mom took me to see Freddy’s Dead (not joking), and 6 years old when we saw Jason Goes to Hell (still not joking). Crazy, right? I could go on and on for hours and hours explaining why 'Hellbound: Hellraiser II’ is the superior Hellraiser film (by a wide margin, in fact), but that’s not the point of this post. What I’d like to address today is a revelation that most Hellraiser fans probably don’t want to hear… but need to hear: Hellraiser 2022 is superior to Hellraiser 1987 in (almost) every way; the Cenobite designs and Doug Bradley’s Portrayal of Pinhead far exceed the 2022 iterations, but beyond that, 'Hulu-Raiser’ takes it. The story is better, the establishment of the lore is better, the pacing is superior, the tone is balanced more efficiently, the inclusion and importance of Leviathan, and so on and so forth. Hellraiser 1987, whether you want to admit it or not, is more of a haunted house movie than a Hellraiser movie. Hellrasier 2022 is far closer in scope, scale, and story, to Hellbound, than the 1987 film is; it’s simply a more efficient introduction to the world.
