Believe it or not, I was never a fan of the 'Give Yourself Goosebumps' side-series as a kid. Don't get me wrong, R.L. Stine is a legend, but the choose-your-own-adventure format always bothered me because the endings were never concrete or solidified. You’d make a choice, turn to page 42, and suddenly you’re a giant block of cheese or trapped in a looping timeline forever. Or, in the words of Tony Soprano: 'Whateva da fuck'. There was no real closure, no definitive finality to the story, just a bunch of random "what-ifs" that felt entirely unsatisfying compared to a standard, tight Goosebumps book. We need to give The Night Eats the World way more credit for what it did with its zombies. Instead of the usual screaming sprinters or the classic moaning undead, this movie gave us something infinitely more terrifying: complete and total silence. The zombies in this film do not make a sound, except for the frantic, wet gnashing of their teeth when they get close to food. That image of a silent crowd of the dead just staring and snapping their jaws in a quiet hallway is pure nightmare fuel. It is late 2005, you are sitting in front of the TV, and the Sci-Fi Channel premieres Return of the Living Dead 4: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead 5: Rave to the Grave back-to-back. Just total straight-to-video insanity broadcasting right into your living room. You are sitting there witnessing glow-stick raver zombies, terrible CGI, and cyber-zombies, completely wondering what the hell you're watching and what you're doing with your life. It was a massive departure from the punk-rock perfection of the original and the two exquisite sequels that followed it up , but man, that specific double-feature era of cable TV hit differently. Everyone has their favorite Simpsons Halloween episode, but let’s stop pretending and crown the actual king. Treehouse of Horror IV is, without a doubt, the absolute best one ever made. From start to finish, it is pure perfection. You get Bart introducing the segments in a parody of Night Gallery, Homer selling his soul for a donut to a Devil Ned Flanders, the brilliant Twilight Zone homage with the gremlin on the side of the school bus, and the incredible Bram Stoker's Dracula parody that ends with the absolute classic Peanuts twist. There is a completely bizarre phenomenon with 80s Italian zombie movies that we need to talk about. If you put on Fulci’s Zombi 2, The Beyond, or City of the Living Dead, they feel like they were filmed in a completely different century. There is a specific grime, a heavy layer of dust, and a dream-like atmosphere that makes them feel decades older than American horror movies released in the exact same era. It is like you are watching cursed footage dug up from a crypt rather than a movie made in 1984 or whatever.
