One of the most tricky aspects when you start out as a freelance writer — or any kind of freelancer/service provider — is your niche. This is the industry you want to specialize in. And it can make a huge difference in the upper ceiling of the pay you'll make per article. In a low-paying niche, you may get paid $200 per article, whereas a high-paying niche may pay you $1000+ per piece!

Professionals who start freelancing as a side hustle typically start with serving clients in their current industries. But choosing a niche may be challenging for most others. That's why I have created a detailed tutorial with a list of freelance writing niches you can start with in 2023. The video's going to be out in about 11 hours. Stay tuned and meanwhile share your struggles of choosing a niche with me :)

One of the most common things that beginner freelance writers struggle with is getting leads for their business. Once you have some samples in your portfolio (even self-published ones), I have found job boards work superbly initially. They can get you a few decent gigs and help you build momentum for your freelance business.

I personally remember having a major breakthrough through the Problogger job board. While applying for the job, it initially seemed dubious because it was a ghostwriting gig. But I had relevant experience and heard back from the hiring manager in a couple of hours. It led to a Skype chat with them and after a paid test piece, a consistently paying writing gig at $300 per post. I would say that gig was the launchpad for my freelance content writing career! #FreelanceWriting #ZeroExperience

Freelance writing is one of the easiest businesses you can start. It's accessible to anyone — even if they don't have a special skill set. You just need the willingness to put in the reps:

- to improve your writing skills and tailor them for an online audience,
- learn how to research even complex subjects and find uncommon insights,
- figure out a channel to get leads for your freelance business
- build relationships with prospects, clients, and fellow freelancers

And that's it. If you're willing to put in the effort you automatically stand out over 90 to 95 percent of freelance writers who don't want to!
