This is a picture from a brain MRI of a young woman who had a brain infection called HSV encephalitis. As you can see, the temporal lobe that you see on the right looks normal, but the brain tissue of the temporal lobe is nearly completely gone on the left! (It looks all black.) The most amazing thing is that she had almost no long-term deficits, and by talking to her you would never know that she was missing so much of her brain!

Saw this in the Chicago airport recently… a sign raising awareness that 1/10 people will have a seizure at one point in their lifetime and nearly 3 MILLION people live with epilepsy in the US alone!
