Fire activity has picked back up on the Park Fire
There are now multiple spots across Lanes Valley Rd. It looks like they are hitting it hard with air attack, but my main concern is that the SW winds will push these spots closer toward Manton and Shingletown

Going live to cover the changing conditions on the Park Fire right now...

If you live north of the #ParkFire and are under an Evacuation Order, you should leave as quickly as possible.
The fire is making a rapid run to the north and with abundant/dry fuels and strong southerly winds, it's not stopping anytime soon.

Park Fire Questions Answered:

How large?
164,282 acres w/ 0% containment

-

How did it start?
A 42-year-old man pushed a burning car into a gully near Alligator Hole in upper Bidwell Park in Chico around 3 pm July 24

-

How has it spread more than 30 miles to the north in such a short time?
1) Wet winter -> abundant grass growth
2) Lack of fire history -> fuels built up for decades
3) Exceptional summer heat -> dried out the fuels
4) Hot, dry, and windy weather conditions

-

How does today's weather forecast look?
1) Hot - Temperatures in the 90s
2) Dry - Relative humidity dropping into the teens
3) Windy - Strong southerly winds around 10-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph

-

What does that mean for fire behavior?
Expecting another day of extreme fire behavior as the southerly winds continue to push the fire north through dry, abundant fuels

-

How are Chico, Forest Ranch, and Cohasset looking?
Chico - Stay updated with Evacuation Orders and Warnings, but the southerly wind is good news for Chico

Forest Ranch - It appears we dodged a bullet here yesterday, but keeping a close eye on it

Cohasset - Cohasset is unfortunately within the fire perimeter.
Keep in mind what Watch Duty points out...
"Please note that fire maps indicate the general burn area but do not detail the measures being taken to protect buildings and homes. Even if a building or home is within the marked fire perimeter, it doesn't necessarily mean it has been damaged or destroyed."

-

Have there been any confirmed structures destroyed?
Cal Fire's latest update says 134 structures have been destroyed

Wildfire is a major problem in California. One of the leading voices that has come forward to address this problem is Zeke Lunder.

Throughout this video, Zeke and I discuss the factors driving the alarming trends of wildfire in California, as well as some potential solutions.
The problems discussed include fuel management, fire suppression, warmer/drier/longer fire seasons, and the large number of people living in the wildland urban interface.
The solutions we talk about range from prescribed fire to goats to rethinking the entire way we plan development.

When I was 14 years old, I decided I wanted to be a weatherman… Today, I’m proud to announce that I am officially the Weekend Broadcast Meteorologist for KSBW Action News 8.
Huge thank you to all the mentors who have helped me along the way, and to my parents for all the times I converted our living room into a greenscreen studio!

I also want to say thank you for all the great support I’ve received on Youtube. I plan on starting videos back up within the next couple weeks!

Cheers!

I've taken advantage of the "calmer" wildfire conditions over the last few days to focus on my Master's Thesis. Unfortunately, it looks like Red Flag conditions are back though, so I'll be back as well this evening to cover the impact of these conditions on the California wildfires. The Red Flag is in place due to potential thunderstorms, which could bring dry lightning and gusty winds. Stay tuned.

Interested to know which wildfire you would like me to focus on in this evening's update/forecast.
I can adjust how much I talk about each fire based on these results, so that the information presented can be as relevant as possible.

Midterms are over, so I’m back!
Stay tuned for my livestream at 1:00pm where we’ll go over all the wildfire updates that have happened over the last week, take an in depth look at the current Red Flag Warning, and forecast what kind of fire danger we should be expecting over the next couple of days.
