Sooo I have 17 credit hours and got accepted into my school’s undergrad research program. I need to maintain a gpa of at least a 3.5 to declare my bioengineering minor and protect my full ride. I DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH TIME I WILL HAVE FOR ART BUT I WILL TRY MY BEST! (Does anyone want a dorm tour?)

21 days until I disappear off the face of the earth and become an academic weapon.

I know I’ve been advertising my commissions a lot but just in case anyone doesn’t know my commissions are open over on my Vgen and through Insta! I’m trying to take as many as I can before I move out so I can have some money saved for transportation/groceries/ and living essentials. Never would I have expected my art to be so controversial but here we are. Since the negativity is starting to seep into my YouTube too I thought I’d briefly bring up some brief talking points!

1. The number one thing that I have received hate on is my commission prices. I honestly don’t understand why this is such an issue because there are millions of artists you can commission besides me so if you don’t like my prices or find that I overprice my art please go commission them!

2. Some people really DONT like the fact that my sketch work is “dirty” (Hello what does that even mean?) Apparently because of this people think I’m a beginner? Chicken-scratching does not make you a beginner! I have a chronic illness that affects my nerves/muscles (literally no one’s business but I feel the need to state this.) Drawing is physically painful to me. It always has been and it always will be, I can do things to minimize this pain but it will never fully go away. This is why I draw in small lines instead of continuous ones. It’s not because I’m not confident in my linework, it’s because drawing is painful and this helps ease the strain a bit. You never know what someone is going through, so before you comment on someone’s art please think about what you are saying and if that comes out of a place of ignorance!

3. I am bad at anatomy/ I pillow shade and therefore I shouldn’t sell my art. I will not stand for these pillow shading allegations. I think the people commenting this just don’t know what pillow shading is. Soft overly-blended shadows are not the same as pillow shading! I overly blend my shadows on purpose, it is a stylistic choice. I like my art to feel very soft and dreamy, which is why I do this. Now for the anatomy I will not claim to be amazing/perfect at it. There are definitely anatomical mistakes in my art, however every artist on the planet no matter how amazing will still mistakes. No artist is perfect, we are all constantly improving! I believe my art is good enough for commissions, and if my clients agree as well then there is literally no issue.

3. “Ai could do that for free and better.” (An actual comment I received) I have nothing to say to this besides ew.

4. “If you’re not an art major you shouldn’t sell your art. Just keep it as a hobby.” I really don’t understand this point? Like yes I’m a STEM major, that doesn’t mean that I can’t sell my art. I’m still incredibly passionate about art and would love to have it as a side job. Me studying physics doesn’t suddenly devalue my art.

5. “Get a real job.” My issue with this comment is that it assumes it knows my life and that I don’t already have a job. Currently managing a job on top of school while having a chronic illness just isn’t doable. My flare ups are just too frequent and managing them both at the same time would be incredibly difficult. I’m taking commissions just to help put towards the cost of living while I’m at university. (Also why are we implying that art isn’t a real job?)

6. “She has a full ride she doesn’t need the money.” While I am so incredibly grateful to have a full ride to my university this commenter assumes that there are not other prices that goes into living. I currently can’t drive (yet again my chronic illness wins) so I need money for transportation. That’s mainly where the commission money is going. It also will go towards basic living necessities. It really bothers me that people online assume that they know someone’s entire life from a thirty second video.

7. “Chronic illness womp womp.” I got this comment after kindly explaining why my lineart is “dirty” and I genuinely don’t even know what to say? That’s a disgusting thing to comment.

8. Me defending myself is not bratty nor is it rude. I have tried my best to be exceedingly polite to all of the commenters as I believe in treating other people with kindness no matter what. That being said I will not let myself be walked over, so I did state my boundaries and explain myself in my comments. It’s unfair to call me bratty for simply standing up for myself. I’m currently trying to work on my people pleasing tendencies, so standing my ground was difficult. Responding by calling me bratty only makes my ability to defend myself harder. Please be kind!

9. Currently what is popular right now is the semi-realistic glossy style/hyper polished anime art. First I’d like to say that there is nothing wrong with that! But just because my art style is different from that doesn’t mean that it is bad. I’m aware that my art style is very unique and not everyone’s cup of tea, it’s inspired by surrealistic paintings and fantasy elements. I want my art to be soft and dreamy. It’s okay to not like my style, but what is not okay is telling me that my art is bad and to quit.

I’m really sorry for this long rant I just felt the need to explain myself with everything going on! I really appreciate all the support, like genuinely the nice comments make my day. Remember that if you don’t like someone’s art just scroll instead of commenting something mean! I promise it will make you a happier person to be kinder. 💕
