The real question is not which tool is best, but whether your company is willing to sacrifice its independence for convenience.

In this article, I analyze how a seemingly harmless tool can be the gateway to total dependence on a single provider. We go beyond the financial cost to look at the strategic cost and the loss of human capital.

Get ready for a new perspective on Business Intelligence.

In previous articles, we analyzed Google's BI solution (Looker), attempting to highlight its distinctive advantages over other market-leading solutions and the philosophy at the heart of its vision and technological innovation.

Similarly, we addressed the issue of human capital in data teams, emphasizing the central role of the differentiating added value that each profile brings and the problems that only they are capable of solving sustainably.

However, our goal was not to deny the importance of tools, but to understand their DNA to enable employees to carry out their missions, develop their expertise, and innovate.

In other words, to build solution expertise based on a fair balance between tool mastery and a focus on value.
To this end, other analyses are required, namely:
- Benchmarking among dominant solutions: This benchmark, while not comprehensive, reflects the major trends of solutions in the market through the choice of target solutions;
- Analysis of the impact of technology differences on how employees carry out their missions and create value.

Due to the impossibility of covering the entire technological spectrum of a modern data stack, our focus will be on BI and analytics solutions (Looker, Tableau, and Power BI).

As a consequence, the roles considered in both analyses will be solely those of the Analytics Engineer and the Data Analyst.

However, and despite the fact that the ELT/ETL component concerns the Analytics Engineer who is a member of the Data Analytics Chapter, it risks being overlooked for the following reasons:
- Minor impact of the choice of BI analytics solutions on the upstream side
- Substantive differences between BI analytics solutions for target profiles, unlike data modeling and transformation tools in the data warehouse and similar tools.

In the next article/video, we will perform the same analysis but for Microsoft's Power BI tool in order to identify the philosophy and common thread between Microsoft products and what this implies for businesses, data teams and even end users.

DBT poses a threat to all BI solution vendors, as it is the clear leader in the data modeling segment.

The danger is even greater when a vendor doesn't have its own DW and offers integrated modeling tools that abstract from the DW used.

Moreover, the search and data discovery features offered in the semantic layer and lineage are a challenge for governance tool vendors, despite their strong specialization.

It seems that DBT is pursuing a strategy of vertical integration (more roles in the data value chain) and horizontal integration (more roles in parallel businesses).

The OSS-first and SaaS-first combination is truly lethal.

Do you think DBT is a threat to proprietary BI tools?

Let me know in the comments πŸ˜‰

I have big concerns about AI. Providers keep pushing boundaries every day while companies can't catch up with them and build something scalable because we are still in the hype. Maybe providers believe that this is the final battle before the new era.

What about you? πŸ€”

I can't believe criticizing agile implementation without asking about product, value, MVPs, xPOC, roadmaps...

This is very scary 😨

I don't know what's going wrong πŸ˜•

What we're witnessing today as a weakness in terms of dataviz capabilities in the Google Analytics solution is just a fit with the needs of their customers in their primary activity in the web economy like search engines and e-commerce.

But at any time it was about building generic analytics solutions in the beginning rather than existing customer-centric solutions.

This is an example of insights we're going to share in the special series dedicated to major Analytics Solutions providers' benchmark.

Agile implementation struggles in data products lie in data product management maturity and specificity especially the endless life cycle of data due to its asset characteristic compared to perishable classic digital products.

Giving access to an accounting and finance module - even how well done it is - does not make the user an accountant or a financier.

Doesn't self-service BI promise the same thing? πŸ€”

Performance Governance Problem is the one that no UX initiative or technology can resolve.

But UX best practices can help to spot hidden problems behind UX product frustrations.

Also some tools bring with the way they were built a lot of condensed solutions about similar problems.
