Nicole, CRPD’s Executive 1 for Communications, joined a group of young people at the Youth Activism Camp organised by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ. Together, they explored what activism means in practice. Participants asked thoughtful questions about disability, LGBT+ issues, and the challenges involved in being an activist. Their genuine curiosity and active engagement made for a meaningful discussion.
The Role of #EqualityBodies in Monitoring the Impact of #AI in Europe. At the recent @equineteuropeaisbl6129 panel discussion, our Commissioner Rhoda Garland shared insights on Malta’s approach to the #EU AI Act. She highlighted the importance of protecting #disabledpeople from discrimination in AI systems, the need for accessible information, and the role of equality bodies in ensuring rights are upheld as AI continues to develop across Europe.

Joseph, how has your experience shaped the way you advocate for disability rights?
I’ve spent much of my life fighting for rights that, thankfully, are now more widely recognised. Things like having access to a Learning Support Educator (#LSE), getting the support I need during exams, and being employed in a mainstream workplace. These experiences have made me more aware of the everyday barriers people with disabilities still face, and they continue to motivate me to push for change.
Joseph, what does ‘We Belong Here’ mean to you as a person with a disability?
To me, it means that people with disabilities should be included in society, not as an act of kindness but because we have value. We have something to offer, and we deserve to be seen as equal and active participants in all areas of life.
Giulia, How has your experience shaped the way you advocate for disability rights?
My experience has taught me that there is no such thing as a single-issue struggle. I am a disabled, queer woman and a migrant - and none of these identities exist in isolation. They constantly shape how I experience the world, how I am treated, and how I choose to advocate. Because of this, my approach to disability rights has always been intersectional. The discrimination I face is not just about disability - it's also about gender, sexuality, race, and migration. These systems of oppression overlap and reinforce each other. So for me, advocating for disability rights means acknowledging this complexity. It means refusing to separate one part of my identity from the others. As writer and poet Audre Lorde said, we do not live single-issue lives - and our advocacy should never be single-issue either. Real change begins when we stop asking people to fragment themselves to be heard.
Giulia, what does ‘We Belong Here’ mean to you as a disabled person?
“We Belong Here” is a powerful reminder that everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and included.
For me, it reflects the importance of creating spaces where people can participate fully, without having to leave parts of themselves behind. It’s about recognising that belonging is not just physical accessibility, but also emotional and social acceptance. I feel truly grateful to be in Malta, a country that is taking steady steps forward when it comes to disability inclusion. Working in the disability sector has given me the chance to contribute to this progress and to be surrounded by people who are deeply committed to building a more inclusive society.
